Medical Director – Patient Safety and Compliance

Location: Lake Forest, Illinois

Salary Range: $147,300 – $294,700 (may vary by location)


Job Summary:

Abbott is seeking a Medical Director, Patient Safety and Compliance for its Infectious Disease Business Unit in Lake Forest, IL. This leadership role oversees safety and risk management for products in the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) diagnostics portfolio. The position involves collaboration with cross-functional teams, responsibility for product safety strategy, medical assessments, clinical input in risk management, and leadership in product development processes. Ideal for professionals with strong experience in medical risk, clinical diagnostics, and regulatory compliance.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all medical risk management activities including Health Hazard Evaluations (HHE), Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEA), and clinical risk assessments

  • Provide scientific leadership in STD-related diagnostics and product safety performance

  • Develop and oversee implementation of patient safety assessments and medical education platforms

  • Represent medical leadership during product action decisions (recalls, risk evaluation)

  • Partner with R&D, Quality Assurance, and Regulatory teams for compliant product development

  • Participate in medical conferences, sales meetings, and physician engagement initiatives

  • Guide literature reviews and maintain subject matter expertise in infectious diseases

  • Mentor and develop the Patient Safety team and define succession planning

  • Author and review platform documents and scientific publications


Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required (Master's preferred); Doctorate (PhD/MD) highly desirable

  • Minimum 12 years of relevant healthcare or pharmaceutical experience

  • At least 4 years in medical platform documentation and product development

  • 2+ years in FMEA/HHE development and risk document leadership

  • Proven proficiency in patient safety, STD diagnostics, and regulatory compliance

  • Strong communication, scientific writing, and cross-functional leadership skills
