Purpose and Scope

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL)/Sr. MSL – Oncology serves as a scientific and medical expert for Astellas, focusing on the identification, engagement, and support of Key External Experts (KEEs) and stakeholders throughout the product life cycle.

This role involves:

  • Acting as a trusted scientific advisor to external experts and healthcare professionals.

  • Collecting and communicating medical insights from the field to internal teams.

  • Delivering scientific education and supporting internal learning initiatives.

  • Collaborating across internal functions to execute tactical field engagement plans aligned with Astellas’ medical strategy.


Key Responsibilities

1. Field Medical Leadership

  • Support the Director, MSL Team Lead in executing tactical field engagement plans.

  • Align field activities with the overall medical and business strategy.

  • Serve as a coach, mentor, and role model for fellow MSLs.

2. Scientific & Clinical Expertise

  • Conduct scientific exchanges with healthcare professionals to share knowledge on Astellas products, therapeutic areas, and disease management trends.

  • Maintain a deep understanding of disease state management, evolving therapies, and healthcare dynamics.

  • Engage stakeholders (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, etc.) through one-on-one and group discussions with strong scientific acumen and clinical insight.

  • Support Medical Education and Evidence Generation initiatives by identifying and addressing data gaps aligned with medical strategy.

3. External Engagement & Collaboration

  • Build long-term, trust-based relationships with KEEs and regional healthcare influencers.

  • Serve as a liaison between Astellas and external experts, ensuring accurate and compliant exchange of scientific information.

  • Actively identify future stakeholders and emerging influencers in oncology.

4. Insight Generation & Communication

  • Gather and analyze medical insights from the field to inform clinical and medical strategies.

  • Share actionable insights internally to enhance understanding of real-world clinical practice and patient care trends.


Qualifications

Required Education & Experience

  • Doctorate Degree in a health-related field (MD, PhD, PharmD, DNP, or DO).

  • 3–5 years of relevant scientific/medical experience within the research-based pharmaceutical industry.

  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in Medical Affairs or a similar field-based medical role.

Working Environment

  • Field-based role with required regional travel across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
