Position Purpose & Scope

The Disease Mechanism Research (DMR) team seeks a scientific leader with deep expertise in oncology and cancer biology to lead preclinical research efforts. The successful candidate will direct a team of scientists to expand understanding of cancer mechanisms, support the development of innovative therapies, and advance Astellas’ oncology pipeline.


Key Responsibilities

Scientific Leadership

  • Lead and guide a diverse team of scientists within the Cancer Biology group.

  • Drive scientific direction for preclinical oncology research programs.

  • Oversee the design and development of tumor models and assays for therapeutic evaluation.

Research & Development

  • Apply expert knowledge of tumor biology—including intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of cancer progression and resistance.

  • Establish in vitro and ex vivo immuno-oncology assays/models for therapeutic assessment.

  • Support investigation of mechanisms of action and resistance in cancer therapies.

  • Contribute to program strategy through expertise in oncogenic signaling pathways.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects and act as a cross-functional liaison across research teams.

  • Communicate scientific findings and strategic recommendations effectively to internal and senior leadership audiences.

  • Mentor junior researchers, ensuring scientific rigor and excellence across projects.


Required Qualifications

  • PhD with postdoctoral training in cancer biology, cancer immunotherapy, or a related field.

  • 7+ years postdoctoral experience in academic or industry research.

  • Proven expertise in solid tumor biology and tumor model development.

  • Demonstrated success in leading innovative research and mentoring scientific teams.

  • Strong communication (verbal, written, interpersonal) and leadership skills.

  • High degree of initiative, problem-solving, and project management capability.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of novel oncology modalities, including:

    • Targeted protein degradation

    • Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs)

    • Bispecific T-cell engagers (BiTEs)

  • Knowledge of tumor metabolism research methodologies.

  • Experience with multicellular in vitro models.


Working Environment

  • On-site role based at the Astellas West Coast Innovation Center, South San Francisco.


Compensation

💰 Salary Range: $140,000 – $200,000
(Final compensation may vary based on experience and qualifications.)
