Role Summary

The Medical Director, Laboratory Operations leads, plans, and manages the scientific and medical quality within the technical department. This role partners with laboratory scientists and technical teams to develop, validate, and optimize clinical assays. The Director also provides medical expertise, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports business growth through operational excellence and scientific leadership.


Key Responsibilities

Scientific and Technical Leadership

  • Select and validate test methods and ensure quality control compliance.

  • Oversee assay development, troubleshooting, and optimization for clinical and analytical applications.

  • Direct research and development of new assays while improving existing methodologies.

Quality, Compliance & Safety

  • Monitor adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality regulations.

  • Review Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) plans, safety policies, and licensing requirements.

  • Provide expert clinical consultations to ensure accurate interpretation of laboratory results.

Operational & Strategic Management

  • Oversee day-to-day laboratory operations and ensure project timelines and client expectations are met.

  • Manage project contracts, scope, pricing, and client communications.

  • Drive financial performance and operational efficiency through strategic planning.

Client & Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with sales and marketing to identify new services and client opportunities.

  • Represent the organization in scientific forums and professional networks.

Team Leadership

  • Recruit, train, and develop laboratory and technical staff.

  • Lead performance management and career development initiatives.

Medical & Clinical Oversight

  • Provide expert medical consultation on laboratory and clinical issues.

  • Assess adverse events and ensure participant safety in clinical trials.


Qualifications

Education:

  • M.D., D.O., or D.D.S. degree, OR

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Sc.D.) in a relevant chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited institution.

Experience:

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in clinical or analytical laboratory leadership.

  • Proven record in developing, validating, and executing laboratory protocols.

  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.

  • Expertise in assay development, validation, and clinical quality systems.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

  • Deep understanding of laboratory regulations and quality standards.


Working Conditions

  • Work primarily in an office or laboratory environment with exposure to electrical equipment.

  • Frequent domestic travel; occasional international travel.

  • Possible rare exposure to biological fluids or infectious agents.

  • Use of PPE required (e.g., gloves, lab coat, safety eyewear).

  • Occasional exposure to fluctuating or extreme temperatures.
