Job Overview

athenahealth is hiring an experienced Medical Coding Associate to support high-quality, compliant, and efficient healthcare revenue cycle operations. This role is designed for professionals with strong multi-specialty medical coding expertise, hands-on RCM experience, and the ability to perform root cause analysis to improve operational outcomes. The position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate clinical coding, process optimization, and stakeholder collaboration across the healthcare ecosystem.


Key Responsibilities

Medical Coding & Operations (60%)

  • Perform accurate medical coding for diagnoses and procedures using ICD and CPT coding systems

  • Ensure correct code assignment, sequencing, and compliance with government and payer regulations

  • Review patient charts and clinical documentation for completeness and accuracy

  • Resolve documentation gaps by coordinating with clients and internal stakeholders

  • Research complex or unusual coding scenarios to ensure accuracy

  • Ensure all codes used are current, valid, and compliant

  • Conduct root cause analysis and resolve coding-related issues by collaborating with vendors, payers, and internal teams

  • Analyze daily operational reports and provide insights on volume trends, spikes, or declines

  • Advocate for process and product improvements using data-driven analysis

Process Improvement & Trend Analysis (30%)

  • Identify and quantify operational work trends

  • Propose solutions to support a more touchless and efficient revenue cycle

  • Drive coordination with BPO partners and cross-functional internal teams

  • Prioritize and implement process improvements based on business impact

Special Projects & Stakeholder Support (10%)

  • Take full ownership of assigned special projects

  • Partner with internal and client-facing teams to resolve claim and coding issues

  • Communicate project status, risks, and resolutions clearly while adhering to timelines

  • Act as a subject matter expert for medical coding and RCM-related initiatives


Required Experience

  • 5 to 7 years of experience in a fast-paced healthcare or operations environment

  • Mandatory experience in Healthcare Revenue Cycle Management (RCM)

  • Strong exposure to multi-specialty medical coding, with preference for surgery coding


Education & Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification

  • Active coding certification required:

    • CPC or CCS (mandatory)

    • CIC certification or inpatient coding knowledge/experience (mandatory)


Required Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of healthcare RCM workflows

  • Excellent analytical, problem-framing, and root cause analysis skills

  • High attention to detail with strong compliance orientation

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate across internal teams, vendors, and payers
