About the Role

athenahealth is seeking a Medical Coding Associate to support accurate medical coding and enhance revenue cycle efficiency.

In this role, you will apply medical coding guidelines across multiple specialties to ensure accurate documentation-to-code mapping, improve coding quality, and support operational and reporting accuracy.

You will report to the Medical Coding Manager.


Key Responsibilities

1. Medical Coding & Accuracy

  • Code medical records across:

    • E/M outpatient

    • E/M inpatient

    • Neurology coding

    • Surgery coding

    • Denial coding cases

  • Ensure accurate mapping of documentation to appropriate codes.

2. Documentation Review & Validation

  • Validate clinical documentation supporting diagnosis and procedure coding.

  • Ensure coding aligns with established guidelines and standards.

3. Quality Assurance

  • Review coded outputs for:

    • Accuracy

    • Consistency

    • Compliance with internal standards

  • Maintain high-quality coding practices.

4. Discrepancy & Denial Management

  • Identify and investigate coding discrepancies.

  • Address denial-related coding issues and support corrections.

  • Reduce rework and prevent recurring errors.

5. Root Cause Analysis & Process Improvement

  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring coding issues.

  • Recommend process improvements to enhance coding accuracy and efficiency.

6. Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain clear records of coding decisions and discrepancy notes.

  • Support accurate reporting and data integrity for operational analytics.

7. Collaboration & Support

  • Work with cross-functional teams to resolve workflow and coding issues.

  • Support internal audits and quality calibration activities.

  • Participate in training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

8. Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining coding references and updates.

  • Contribute to special projects and process improvement initiatives.

  • Support operational reporting through trend analysis of coding issues.


Required Qualifications

Experience

  • 6–8 years of experience in medical coding and revenue cycle workflows.

  • Strong experience in:

    • E/M outpatient coding

    • E/M inpatient coding

    • Neurology coding

    • Surgery coding

    • Denial coding workflows

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of medical coding guidelines and documentation standards.

  • Experience in identifying and resolving coding discrepancies.

  • Ability to perform root cause analysis for recurring issues.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Communication

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to document findings clearly and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.

Work Environment

  • Ability to work in a hybrid model based in Chennai, India.
