Position: Certified Medical Assistant
Location: Largo, MD (UM Capital Region Medical Center)
Compensation: $20.62 - $28.87 per hour (refer to the 2024-2025 UMMS Benefits Guide for details)

Position Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant plays a vital role in delivering patient care and supporting the healthcare team under the direction of a physician. This role encompasses both clinical and administrative responsibilities, ensuring smooth operations in patient treatment and office management.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  1. Prepare patients for tests, treatments, and procedures.
  2. Perform wound care, suture/staple removal, and specimen collection.
  3. Conduct procedures such as EKGs, spirometry, and hearing/vision screenings.
  4. Administer vaccinations, oxygen, and nebulizer treatments as directed by the provider.
  5. Document medical information, perform vital checks, and manage patient histories.
  6. Conduct routine Point of Care testing (e.g., pregnancy tests, glucose checks).
  7. Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of medical instruments and equipment.
  8. Manage inventory, restock exam rooms, and handle expired supplies.
  9. Provide follow-up on abnormal test results and assist in patient education.

Administrative Duties

  1. Schedule and coordinate patient appointments, ensuring proper follow-up care.
  2. Update and maintain patient medical records in the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
  3. Greet patients and visitors, answering inquiries courteously and efficiently.
  4. Ensure patient accounts are updated with the most recent medical history.
  5. Communicate with healthcare providers regarding referrals and test results.
  6. Assist in quality initiatives by contacting patients with gaps in care.

Customer Service & Teamwork

  1. Exhibit professionalism and courtesy when interacting with patients, visitors, and colleagues.
  2. Respond to patient inquiries with empathy and confidentiality.
  3. Collaborate effectively with team members and other departments.
  4. Participate in service recovery efforts to resolve customer concerns.

Qualifications

Education and Certifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of a Medical Assistant program is mandatory.
  • Required Certification:
    • CMA (American Association of Medical Assistants)
    • CCMA (National Healthcare Associates)
    • RNA (American Medical Technologists)
    • Registered Medical Assistant (American Registry of Medical Assistants)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS-HCP) certification is required.

Experience

  • At least three years of experience as a Certified Medical Assistant, including:
    • One year in a specialized practice area.
    • Proficiency in phlebotomy and EMR systems.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency with medical equipment such as BP machines, EKGs, and spirometry devices.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to lift/carry objects weighing 21-50 pounds.
  • Stooping, bending, and fine hand manipulation required.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials requiring protective measures.
