Position Overview
Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Manager, R&D Projects with a specialization in Should Costing. This role plays a vital part in driving cost efficiency through the application of advanced cost analysis methods, manufacturing insights, and collaborative innovation. The ideal candidate will combine strong engineering knowledge with cost modeling capabilities and continuous improvement mindsets.


Key Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced cost methodologies and software models to create and maintain accurate cost data and models.

  • Construct complete should-cost models for products and components, ensuring robust cost analysis.

  • Analyze existing products and manufacturing processes to identify and quantify cost-saving opportunities.

  • Gather and interpret data on manufacturing costs, yields, and operational efficiency.

  • Collaborate with design engineering teams to embed design-to-cost principles using comprehensive statistical insights.

  • Partner with procurement and category teams to conduct cost breakdown and gap analysis between vendor quotes and internal cost models.

  • Engage with suppliers to evaluate manufacturing processes, exploring cost-reduction opportunities via material/process/technology substitutions.

  • Organize workshops and brainstorming sessions to drive innovation in cost optimization.

  • Assess and select suppliers based on cost, quality, and reliability standards.

  • Advise suppliers on alternative manufacturing techniques to boost efficiency and reduce expenses.

  • Conduct audits and evaluations of suppliers for compliance with cost, quality, and delivery metrics.

  • Develop and standardize procedures for cost analysis and validation.

  • Lead process improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and other methodologies.

  • Manage VA/VE (Value Analysis/Value Engineering) efforts to identify functionally equivalent, cost-effective solutions.

  • Provide training and mentoring to junior engineers and team members.

  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports to senior leadership on cost reduction efforts and outcomes.

  • Promote a culture of cost awareness and continuous improvement across teams.


Required Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Automobile, or Mechatronics Engineering.

  • Strong experience in manufacturing engineering and should cost analysis.

  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing mechanical commodities: machining, sheet metal, casting, forging, plastics, composites, rubber, MIM, surface treatments, and packaging.

  • Deep knowledge of surface finishes and coating techniques.

  • Proficiency in drawing standards: ANSI, ISO, ASME, DIN, JIS, BS.

  • Skilled in costing software: Apriori, DFMA, Costimator, NPV, TCO.

  • Experience with CAD tools: SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD.

  • Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, and VA/VE methodologies.

  • Strong project management and multitasking capabilities.

  • Creative problem-solving and analytical thinking.

  • Effective communicator with excellent presentation skills.
