Position Overview:

The Human Genetics Lead - Diabetes, Obesity, and Complications will play a pivotal role within Lilly’s Diabetes, Obesity, and Complications Therapeutic Area (DOCTA). This leadership role is designed for an individual with deep expertise in human genetics and metabolic disease biology. You will lead a team of geneticists, develop and execute strategic initiatives, and foster collaborations with internal and external partners. This position will enable you to influence disease target identification, expand indications, and enhance the understanding of disease mechanisms to advance therapeutic discovery. You will have the opportunity to impact one of the most exciting areas of medical research today.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Scientific Leadership & Strategy: Provide visionary leadership in human genetics to position Lilly at the forefront of genetics research for diabetes, obesity, and complications.
  • Team Leadership: Build, lead, and mentor a diverse team of experts in statistical/population genetics, genomics, and genetic epidemiology.
  • Resource Management: Manage internal hires, postdoctoral fellows, contractors, vendors, and strategic partners to execute on strategic priorities.
  • Innovative Execution Models: Design and implement a visiting scholar program for senior human genetics researchers.
  • Data Integration: Optimize the use of large-scale public genetic and genomic resources. Integrate population biobanks and genome sequencing with patient-derived data from clinical trials to generate novel insights.
  • Target Identification & Validation: Align with DOCTA’s strategic priorities to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets, biomarkers, and clinical trial designs.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Lead initiatives to translate genetic/genomic findings into actionable insights that inform drug discovery and clinical trial strategies.
  • Strategic Collaborations: Drive strategic collaborations with external partners to access unique genetic datasets and amplify research capabilities.
  • Scientific Representation: Represent Lilly at key scientific conferences, stay engaged with the broader genetics and genomics community, and ensure Lilly is at the forefront of innovation.
  • Communication & Publications: Interpret and communicate the results of genetic analyses through scientific manuscripts, posters, and presentations. Effectively share the group's progress with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Standard Methodology Implementation: Ensure the implementation of best practices in scientific project execution and documentation (e.g., JIRA, Confluence, Git, code reviews).
  • Genetic Analysis Execution: Perform hands-on genetic analyses when necessary and develop reproducible pipelines for genetics analyses within the team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: PhD or equivalent in Human Genetics, Statistical Genetics, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least 4 years of industry experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role.

Additional Skills & Preferences:

  • Team Building & Leadership: Demonstrated success in building, mentoring, and managing scientific teams (3+ years managing direct reports).
  • Human Genetics Workflows: Extensive experience with human genetics workflows, including WGS, WES, and genotyping data analysis for association studies, polygenic risk scores, and rare variant analysis.
  • Clinical & Biomedical Informatics Data: Experience working with clinical and observational biomedical data sets, including clinical trials, EHRs, and large biobanks (e.g., UK Biobank).
  • Pharma/Biotech/Academia Experience: Proven track record in high-impact research programs in pharma, biotech, or academia. Knowledge of drug development is strongly preferred.
  • Clinical/Diagnostic Genetics: Experience in clinical/diagnostic genetics, including ACMG guidelines for variant annotation, is preferred.
  • Publications: Strong record of publications in top-tier scientific journals.
  • Collaboration Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Matrixed Organization Leadership: Proven success in leading within a matrixed organization and driving outcomes through collaborative teamwork.

Compensation:

The anticipated annual compensation for this position ranges from $153,750 to $270,600 depending on education, experience, skills, and geographic location.
