Role Purpose

The Group Lead - Discovery Chemistry is responsible for leading a team in the Synthetic Organic Chemistry Division, executing high-profile projects, and ensuring the successful development and execution of chemistry strategies. This leadership role involves managing a team of 40-100 FTEs, driving project deliverables, improving operational efficiency, and fostering cross-functional collaboration.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Responsibilities

Safety Management

  • Commitment to safety for self, team, and organization.
  • Ensure ZERO safety incidents in the lab and workplace.
  • Ensure ZERO safety non-compliance at the workplace.
  • Report incidents and near-misses, learning from them to prevent recurrence.
  • Regularly review SOPs and checklists to maintain complete and accurate safety protocols.

Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with Syngene’s quality standards at all times.
  • ZERO data integrity incidents and adherence to ALCOA+ principles.
  • Prevent repeat audit observations and implement refinements in SOPs for continuous improvement.
  • Track and address deviations within <2% annually, ensuring timely corrective actions.

Project Execution & Delivery

  • Oversee Project Health Index, ensuring project planning, execution, and deliverables are met.
  • Track KPIs for the team, ensuring quality and timeliness of services.
  • Achieve quarterly improvements in key metrics such as reactions per FTE, steps per FTE, compounds per FTE, and TAT targets.
  • Set up processes, governance, and tools for transparent project management.

Customer Engagement

  • Engage with customers to understand their needs and propose suitable chemistry platforms and services.
  • Provide excellent service and support, strengthening relationships with existing customers.
  • Collaborate with teams to monitor project aspects such as communication, technology development, and delivery.
  • Maintain 0% business attrition related to scientific environment and work culture.

Cost Management

  • Manage lab infrastructure lifecycle and optimize resource utilization.
  • Ensure cost efficiency and maintain appropriate resource ratios.
  • Maintain gross material costs17.0% of revenue.
  • Ensure unbilled resources are kept <7% overall.
  • Maintain an appropriate span of control for managers (1:7).

Compliance & Data Integrity

  • Ensure compliance with ALCOA+ principles in experiments and data generated.
  • Track ALCOA+ deviations and ensure they remain <2% annually.
  • Maintain 100% compliance with Gemba walk, timesheet, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Ensure all mandatory training related to data integrity, health, and safety is completed on time by team members.

People Management & Development

  • Develop leaders and implement succession planning for critical roles.
  • Reduce attrition of critical talent to <5%.
  • Focus on competency development and skills required for future business needs.

Leadership Competencies

  • Strong leadership skills to manage and develop a high-performing team.
  • Visionary leadership with a strategic approach to meet market demands and achieve business goals.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • 4 reactions/FTE/day, 22 steps/FTE/month, and 6 compounds/FTE/month.
  • 70% of targets within TAT (30 days).
  • Maintain zero audit findings and ensure continuous SOP compliance.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry with ~15 years post-doctoral experience or
  • M.Sc. with >25 years of industrial experience.
  • Proven experience in leading large teams (40-100 FTEs) and executing high-profile chemistry projects.
