CVIR Medical Coder – National Remote

Company: Optum – UnitedHealth Group
Location: Minnetonka, MN (Remote – Nationwide)
Compensation: $19.86 – $38.85 per hour (based on experience)


Job Summary

Optum is seeking an experienced CVIR Medical Coder to join its remote medical coding team. This role involves assigning accurate CPT and ICD-10 codes for complex interventional radiology services, outpatient facility encounters, and multispecialty procedures. Ideal candidates will have expertise in ICD-10, CPT, and outpatient coding guidelines, ensuring compliance with payer regulations and supporting revenue cycle efficiency.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assign CPT and ICD-10 codes for interventional radiology procedures, acute care, ED, and same-day surgeries.

  • Review clinical notes for charge capture accuracy and coding compliance.

  • Resolve coding-related denials and rejections in collaboration with revenue cycle teams.

  • Query providers for clarification on clinical documentation and resolve coding discrepancies.

  • Abstract additional data elements during the coding process as required.

  • Stay updated on AAPC/AHIMA coding standards, payer guidelines, and regulatory changes.

  • Maintain coding quality and productivity benchmarks set by Optum.

  • Participate in team meetings and ongoing coding education programs.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher).

  • Professional coding certification: CCA, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-H/COC, CIC, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-A (AAPC/AHIMA).

  • 2+ years of interventional radiology coding experience.

  • 2+ years of outpatient facility coding experience.

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10 coding and guidelines.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Windows, and EMR systems.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with encoder systems (eCAC, 3M, EPIC).

  • Advanced Excel skills (data entry, reports, and analysis).
