Job Description for Concurrent Inpatient Medical Coder

Position: Concurrent Inpatient Medical Coder

Pay: $36.00 - $39.00 per hour (based on experience, location, education, and certifications)
Schedule: Ideal Schedule: Monday to Friday, 10 AM EST - 2 PM EST (earlier start times considered)

Position Overview:
As a Concurrent Inpatient Medical Coder, you will be responsible for coding and abstracting services for acute care inpatients. You will apply your expertise to assign diagnostic and procedural codes, ensuring accurate DRG assignment. Your role will involve reviewing medical records, querying for clarification as needed, and contributing to coding education within the team. You will be working in a remote capacity with flexible working hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review medical records to identify diagnoses and procedures relevant to patient care, selecting principal diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensure correct DRG assignment by thoroughly reviewing the medical record according to client guidelines.
  • Use Aquity applications to enter coded charts in real-time throughout scheduled shifts.
  • Request clarification from physicians for ambiguous or conflicting documentation.
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions, including shadowing and additional coding education.
  • Stay updated on the Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, and official coding guidelines.
  • Maintain current coding credentials (CCDS or CDIP) and keep coding knowledge up to date.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills and contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Participate in industry forums and Coding Roundtables.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of acute care coding experience, particularly inpatient concurrent coding.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT coding principles, and the ability to use Meditech and 3M.
  • Certifications: Required CCDS or CDIP certification.
  • Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong attention to detail and accuracy in coding.
  • Other Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); ability to handle administrative tasks such as spreadsheets and emails.

Working Environment:
This is a remote position requiring extended periods of computer-based work, including keyboarding and sitting. Occasional phone calls related to work tasks.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Pay range: $36.00 - $39.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
