Position Overview:
Optum is seeking a Cardiothoracic Medical Coder to join our remote team. In this role, you will apply expert-level knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 codes to accurately code professional multispecialty E/M and surgical services, with a focus on cardiology, cardiovascular, vascular, and cardiothoracic specialties. You will directly contribute to improved health outcomes and support provider documentation through analysis, feedback, and correction of coding issues.

This full-time (40 hours/week), Monday through Friday role offers flexible hours and the opportunity to work from anywhere in the U.S.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Accurately assign CPT and ICD-10 codes for pro-fee multispecialty E/M and surgical services per official coding guidelines.

  • Apply expertise in cardiology, cardiovascular, vascular, and cardiothoracic coding.

  • Analyze and correct CCI edits and medical necessity edits.

  • Abstract additional data elements during chart reviews as needed.

  • Ensure ethical coding practices aligned with AAPC/AHIMA standards.

  • Meet or exceed coding quality and productivity standards set by Optum360.

  • Provide constructive documentation feedback to providers and issue queries when necessary.

  • Stay updated on coding standards and participate in ongoing training and meetings.

  • Track and maintain coding records for coded, held, and missing charts.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.


Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma / GED (or higher)

  • Professional coder certification (AHIMA and/or AAPC – ROCC, CPC, COC, CPC-P, CCS)

  • 2+ years of physician (Pro-Fee) coding experience

  • 1+ years of experience in Cardiothoracic coding

  • Advanced knowledge of ICD-10

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel and EMR systems

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week with a flexible schedule


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intermediate Excel skills (data entry, saving, spreadsheet management)
