About the Role

The Assistant Manager will oversee medical coding operations, manage team performance, and ensure compliance with regulatory and client requirements. This leadership role focuses on productivity, quality, and operational efficiency, while fostering a collaborative work environment aligned with Optum’s mission to improve health outcomes globally.


Key Responsibilities

Operational & Coding Management

  • Maintain updated knowledge of coding, billing requirements, and regulatory changes.

  • Monitor KPIs including productivity, quality, TAT, attendance, and attrition.

  • Perform quick turnaround and logical analysis of data for operational decisions.

  • Evaluate operational practices and procedures to ensure efficiency and compliance.

  • Actively support quality initiatives and internal audits to meet compliance standards.

  • Review and analyze periodic reports and metrics to guide operational improvements.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Manage overall personnel, performance, and discipline within assigned projects.

  • Provide direction, coaching, and regular feedback to team members.

  • Identify training needs and deliver educational interventions to improve weak areas.

  • Develop retention strategies and manage attrition.

  • Foster a positive work environment that encourages morale, creativity, teamwork, and quality.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Manage relationships with internal stakeholders and clients; act as primary point of contact.

  • Negotiate solutions, resolve conflicts, and anticipate critical situations.

  • Collaborate closely with SMEs, auditors, and trainers to maintain high operational standards.

Strategic & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Support senior management in planning, implementing, and modifying operational systems and procedures.

  • Prepare annual business plans, including operating budgets.

  • Ensure compliance with employment contracts, company policies, and directives, including work shifts, reassignments, and alternative arrangements.


Required Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate or Postgraduate in Life Sciences, Allied Medicine (BHMS, BAMS, BPT, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing).

  • Experience:

    • 8+ years in medical coding

    • 2+ years as a Team Lead

  • Certification: AAPC/AHIMA certified coder (CCS, CPC, CPC-H, CCS-P)

  • Knowledge & Skills:

    • Medical terminology, human anatomy/physiology, pathophysiology, ICD-10-CM, CPT

    • Healthcare reimbursement methodologies

    • Organizational structure, workflow, and operational procedures

    • Analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills

    • Employee engagement, coaching, and team enablement
