Job Overview

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is seeking an experienced Assistant Manager – Medical & Clinical Operations to lead and manage healthcare coding and clinical operations projects. This leadership role is critical in driving operational excellence, client satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and team performance within a fast-paced healthcare services environment.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in medical coding, healthcare reimbursement, people management, and client engagement, along with a strong ability to manage KPIs, audits, and continuous process improvements.


Key Responsibilities

Operational & People Management

  • Lead and manage assigned projects, overseeing team performance, productivity, quality, TAT, attendance, and attrition

  • Provide functional expertise and leadership to ensure delivery of operational objectives

  • Manage personnel performance, discipline, coaching, and career development

  • Build and execute retention strategies to reduce attrition and enhance employee engagement

  • Monitor day-to-day operations, absences, and workflow efficiency

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, managing end-to-end client communication and relationships

  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, SMEs, auditors, and trainers to meet project and compliance requirements

  • Review and analyze periodic operational reports, dashboards, and metrics

Quality, Compliance & Process Improvement

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of medical coding, billing regulations, and regulatory changes

  • Actively support internal and external audits, ensuring full compliance with regulatory and organizational standards

  • Drive quality initiatives and continuous process improvements

  • Evaluate existing operational practices and recommend enhancements aligned with business goals

Strategic & Business Planning

  • Support senior management in planning, implementing, and modifying operational systems and procedures

  • Contribute to annual business planning, including operating budgets

  • Anticipate and resolve critical operational issues, conflicts, and escalations using data-driven decision-making


Required Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate or Postgraduate degree in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine, including:

    • BHMS, BAMS, BPT

    • Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing

    • Other relevant healthcare disciplines

Certifications

  • Certified Medical Coder (AAPC / AHIMA): CCS, CPC, CPC-H, or CCS-P


Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years of medical coding experience

  • At least 2 years of experience as a Team Lead or equivalent leadership role

  • Strong understanding of healthcare reimbursement methodologies, organizational workflows, and operating procedures


Skills & Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology

  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and enable teams to achieve operational goals

  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in 1:1 coaching, performance feedback, and training needs identification

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with SMEs, auditors, and trainers

  • Strong focus on customer satisfaction, employee engagement, and quality outcomes
