Role Overview
The Therapy Area Lead (Oncology – GI Cancer) is a senior office-based Medical Affairs leadership role responsible for defining and executing the strategic direction for the Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncology portfolio in India. This position combines scientific leadership, cross-functional collaboration, healthcare ecosystem shaping, and team management to ensure business and medical objectives are achieved in alignment with regulatory and compliance standards.

The role requires deep expertise in oncology, strong stakeholder engagement capability, and the ability to translate healthcare system insights into actionable medical strategies that improve patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Medical Strategy & Clinical Leadership

  • Develop and execute Therapy Area Medical Affairs Plans aligned with portfolio strategy.

  • Identify healthcare system gaps and translate them into actionable initiatives that enhance patient pathways and treatment standards.

  • Lead real-world evidence (RWE) generation initiatives and ensure scientific rigor.

  • Interpret and communicate RWE findings to inform internal strategy and external decision-making.

  • Drive medically led initiatives that support guideline adoption and evidence-based practice.

  • Provide scientific input into pre-launch and post-launch strategies, including market access and lifecycle management.

Scientific Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Establish AstraZeneca as a scientific leader in GI Oncology.

  • Engage with key stakeholders including HCPs, policy makers, patient advocacy groups, and government authorities.

  • Lead educational initiatives and develop clinical support tools.

  • Collaborate across Commercial, Market Access, Regulatory Affairs, Pharmacovigilance, Compliance, and Corporate Affairs teams.

Team Leadership & Capability Building

  • Build and lead a high-performing Medical Affairs team.

  • Set clear objectives and align team priorities with broader business strategy.

  • Mentor and coach junior Medical Affairs professionals.

  • Promote scientific excellence, compliance, and continuous learning culture.

Medical Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure all therapy area materials meet regulatory and scientific standards.

  • Provide medical signatory approval for promotional and scientific materials.

  • Oversee adherence to pharmacovigilance requirements, RMPs, and product safety updates.

  • Ensure compliance with internal SOPs and local Code of Ethics.

Project & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Lead cross-functional initiatives such as RWE studies, clinical trials, and ecosystem-shaping projects.

  • Drive scalable healthcare initiatives that enable sustainable patient access and quality care improvements.

  • Measure and demonstrate impact of medical initiatives.

Required Experience

  • Science degree or Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline.

  • Minimum 12–15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with extensive exposure to Medical Affairs.

  • At least 5–8 years of oncology experience, preferably in GI cancer.

  • Demonstrated team leadership experience in a matrix environment.

  • Strong knowledge of clinical development, regulatory frameworks, and pharmacovigilance requirements.

  • Proven stakeholder management experience across internal and external ecosystems.

  • Experience leading cross-functional projects such as RWE, pre-launch, or market access initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (MD, PhD, PharmD) preferred.

  • Experience in drug discovery, lifecycle management, and advanced oncology pipeline strategy.

  • Exposure to ecosystem-scale healthcare transformation initiatives.

  • Innovative, solution-oriented mindset with strong strategic thinking capability.
