Experience Required: 6-9 years
Department: Synthetic Chemistry

About Syngene:

Syngene International Ltd. is a leading contract research, development, and manufacturing organization (CRDMO) offering integrated scientific services across early discovery, development, and commercial supply. The company prioritizes innovation, safety, and operational excellence, ensuring a high level of integrity, quality, and compliance in all research activities.

At Syngene, safety is at the core of all operations. Employees are expected to follow all environment, health, and safety (EHS) protocols, adhere to data integrity guidelines, and contribute to a corporate culture that prioritizes safety alongside business performance.

Job Purpose:

The Synthetic Chemistry Scientist will be responsible for conducting organic synthesis reactions and delivering final compounds efficiently while maintaining high safety and quality standards. The role demands strong problem-solving skills in synthetic chemistry, the ability to design synthetic schemes independently, and expertise in executing reactions with a quick turnaround time. The scientist will also ensure proper documentation in compliance with Syngene's Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) policies.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Synthetic Chemistry & Reaction Execution:

  • Independently design synthetic schemes for target compounds, including identifying rate-limiting steps and proposing mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct synthetic reactions, reaction workups, and purifications using techniques such as column chromatography, crystallization, re-crystallization, and preparative TLC.
  • Efficiently execute the synthesis of final compounds within the expected turnaround time.
  • Ensure all safety protocols are followed when handling chemicals, and be familiar with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the materials used.

2. Analytical Interpretation & Purification:

  • Perform purification of synthesized compounds using advanced techniques.
  • Interpret analytical data from techniques such as NMR, LC-MS, IR, and HPLC for compound characterization.
  • Ensure that all synthesized samples are appropriately analyzed, recorded, and prepared for shipment.

3. Documentation & Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of experimental observations, results, and resource utilization in the Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN).
  • Ensure strict confidentiality in handling intellectual property and research data.
  • Comply with EHS and quality system requirements, ensuring both personal and laboratory safety.

4. Productivity & Performance:

  • Meet Syngene’s productivity expectations in terms of compounds synthesized per month, reaction steps per month, and overall productivity index (~1.5).
  • Continuously improve processes to enhance efficiency while maintaining high-quality output.

5. Training & Safety Compliance:

  • Complete all mandatory safety and integrity training as required by Syngene.
  • Stay up to date with emergency response procedures for chemical spills, fire incidents, and waste management per EHS guidelines.

Technical Skills & Competencies:

Mandatory Skills:

  • Strong expertise in organic synthesis, reaction mechanisms, and retrosynthetic analysis.
  • Ability to design synthetic routes independently and troubleshoot synthesis-related challenges.
  • Excellent purification and analytical interpretation skills for compound characterization.
  • Proficiency in handling and operating synthetic chemistry equipment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with literature search engines and predictive synthesis tools for optimizing reaction strategies.
  • Experience with analytical techniques such as NMR, LC-MS, HPLC, and IR spectroscopy.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to dynamic project needs.

Educational Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree: M.Sc. in General Chemistry or Organic Chemistry.
  • Experience: 6-9 years of hands-on experience in synthetic organic chemistry.
  • Competencies: Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Behavioral Skills:

  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and detail-oriented approach to work.
  • Effective communication skills to report findings and collaborate with other teams.
