Role Overview

The Lead Scientist – Synthetic Chemistry will be responsible for independently designing synthetic schemes, executing organic synthesis reactions, and delivering high-quality compounds with fast turnaround times. The role demands problem-solving expertise, strong analytical interpretation skills, and the ability to lead and mentor junior scientists in a CRO setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design synthetic schemes for target molecules, proactively identifying potential bottlenecks and implementing mitigation strategies.

  • Perform synthetic reactions, workups, purification (column chromatography, crystallization, re-crystallization, preparative TLC) and operate laboratory equipment efficiently.

  • Deliver final compounds on schedule while meeting Syngene’s productivity metrics (# of compounds/month, # of steps/month, productivity index ~1.5) without compromising quality or safety.

  • Record experimental observations and results in compliance with Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) policies.

  • Coordinate sample analysis, document findings, and communicate progress to supervisors or group leaders.

  • Demonstrate advanced analytical interpretation and purification expertise to ensure compound quality.

  • Maintain awareness of chemical hazards, SDS, emergency procedures, and EHS-compliant waste segregation.

  • Follow all safety, quality, and confidentiality protocols rigorously.

  • Utilize literature search engines and predictive synthesis tools to support project planning and execution.

  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to the overall development of the synthetic chemistry team.

Experience Required

  • 6–9 years of experience in synthetic chemistry within a CRO or pharmaceutical discovery environment.

  • Proven ability to design synthetic schemes and independently troubleshoot complex synthesis problems.

Educational Qualification

  • M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry or General Chemistry.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of organic synthesis and reaction mechanisms.

  • Expertise in purification techniques and analytical interpretation.

  • Familiarity with laboratory apparatus and instrumentation relevant to synthetic chemistry.

  • Competency in predictive synthesis tools and literature-based research.
