Job Summary

The Medical Coding Specialist (SPE – Medical Coding HC) will be responsible for ensuring accurate and compliant medical coding across healthcare products and records. This role contributes directly to the efficiency of healthcare operations and supports Cognizant’s mission to improve patient care.

The ideal candidate will bring 2 to 4 years of medical coding experience, possess strong analytical and communication skills, and hold a CPC or CCS certification.


Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately and promptly code medical records to support healthcare operations and billing.

  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to verify and clarify coding information, ensuring compliance with industry standards.

  • Analyze medical documentation to assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes.

  • Stay updated with current coding guidelines, regulations, and standards.

  • Provide feedback and recommendations to improve coding processes and operational efficiency.

  • Utilize healthcare software and tools to enhance data management and coding accuracy.

  • Support the development and implementation of coding policies and SOPs.

  • Participate in training sessions and workshops to maintain coding expertise.

  • Contribute to the creation of coding resources and knowledge-sharing tools.

  • Assist in preparing data reports and analytics to support business decisions.

  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

  • Monitor and evaluate coding performance metrics to identify areas for improvement.

  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure seamless integration of coding systems with healthcare applications.


Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Healthcare, or related field preferred.

  • Experience: 2–4 years of hands-on experience in medical coding.

  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of medical coding principles, ICD, CPT, and HCPCS systems.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in healthcare software/products used for coding and data management.

  • Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret complex medical documentation accurately.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

    • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

    • Adaptability in a hybrid work environment.

    • Strong problem-solving and time-management skills.


Certifications (Mandatory)

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) — AAPC

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) — AHIMA
