Role Summary
Pfizer's Oncology Research Unit (ORU) in La Jolla, California, is seeking a Senior Scientist (PhD) to join the Post-Candidate Research (PCR) group, focused on translating basic discoveries in the field of immune oncology (IO) into novel therapeutics. The Senior Scientist will serve as a technical subject matter expert and scientific contributor, working with a collaborative team of motivated scientists to advance clinical and pre-clinical drug programs in the immune oncology field. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in immunology and cancer biology, with a deep understanding of emerging field technologies and novel approaches to probe their mechanisms of action.

Role Responsibilities

  • Independently design, execute, and analyze experiments to evaluate mechanism of action, elucidate resistance mechanisms, and identify drug combinations to advance preclinical and clinical-stage IO programs
  • Collaborate with the Oncology Research Unit, including research, discovery biology, computational biology, in vivo pharmacology, toxicology, and drug pharmacokinetics teams
  • Incorporate novel methods to progress preclinical research and develop new ways of testing hypotheses
  • Present research results at project team meetings and other research forums
  • Plan resource requirements for meeting research goals
  • Supervise and mentor junior colleagues in experimental assay design, execution, and analysis
  • Engage with external collaborations and CROs when needed
  • Contribute to a culture that embraces scientific excellence, continuous learning, and improvement

Qualifications

  • Must-Have: PhD in cancer biology, tumor immunology, or related field with 2+ years of postdoctoral experience in an academic or pharmaceutical/biotech environment

  • Strong expertise in tumor biology or immunology, with publications in peer-reviewed journals

  • Proficiency in immune assays and cellular techniques (e.g., flow cytometry, cytokine measurements, T cell assays)

  • Strong ability to multi-task and work independently in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

  • Nice-to-Have: Previous industry experience in immune-oncology drug discovery, experience with writing technical reports for regulatory filings, and mentoring junior scientists

Work Location: On Premise

Annual Base Salary: $88,300.00 - $147,100.00 (eligible for Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan and other benefits)
