Role Summary

The Senior Medical Advisor (Rare Diseases) is an office-based medical leader responsible for providing strategic therapeutic area direction, scientific leadership, and medical governance. The role ensures alignment of Medical Affairs Plans with business unit goals and contributes to scalable, sustainable changes in healthcare ecosystems to improve patient outcomes and access to quality care.

This position acts as a cross-functional catalyst, combining scientific expertise, medical strategy, stakeholder engagement, and innovation to shape clinical practice and support the adoption of evidence-based treatment approaches.


Key Responsibilities

1. Scientific Expertise

  • Maintain deep knowledge of disease management, AstraZeneca products, emerging therapies, and competitive landscape.

  • Lead development and management of the Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP).

  • Serve as subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Train and mentor internal teams within the therapeutic area.


2. Medical Strategy & Clinical Input

  • Ensure FMSP and MSL activities align with overall Medical Affairs Strategic Plans.

  • Develop Integrated Engagement Plans targeting both traditional (HCPs) and non-traditional stakeholders (government, PAGs, policy makers).

  • Provide strategic input for medical and product planning.

  • Prioritize and guide cross-functional activities to support portfolio goals.

  • Identify opportunities for scalable clinical practice transformation and patient access improvements.

  • Promote digital innovation and technology for patient-centric solutions.

  • Drive data-informed decisions using dashboards and analytics.

  • Communicate actionable field insights to internal teams.

  • Provide regular progress updates, variance analysis, and mitigation strategies.

  • Lead medical education initiatives and development of clinical support tools.


3. Medical Governance & Compliance

  • Provide expert scientific review and approval for materials related to complex drugs and high-impact events (e.g., conferences).

  • Ensure medical accuracy of marketing materials and adherence to AstraZeneca and external regulatory standards.

  • Ensure branding and communication are compliant with medical governance policies.


Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with relevant specialization or experience in rare diseases/related therapy areas.

  • Extensive experience in Medical Affairs within the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Strong understanding of medical governance and field medical operations.

  • Excellent communication, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple internal/external stakeholders.

Desirable

  • MBBS or MD (preferred).

  • Experience in basic research, drug development, or lifecycle management.

  • Understanding of multiple Medical Affairs sub-functions.

  • Innovative, solution-oriented mindset.
