Primary Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient services in hospital settings, ensuring compliance with official and client-specific guidelines.

  • Understand DRG assignment and the impact of CC/MCC.

  • Abstract additional data elements during chart review as needed.

  • Adhere to ethical coding standards set by AAPC and/or AHIMA.

  • Maintain productivity of 1.5–2.5 charts per hour while meeting quality standards.

  • Stay updated with AHA guideline changes and apply them consistently.

  • Provide documentation feedback to providers and query physicians when required.

  • Keep coding knowledge current through materials shared by Quality and Coding leadership.

  • Participate in coding department meetings and training events.

  • Track and maintain records of coded, held, and missing charts.

  • Collaborate with team members to improve productivity and quality.

  • Organize and prioritize work to ensure timely coding and resolution of edits per compliance requirements.

  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA policies and data security standards.

  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and directives including reassignments, work shifts, and flexible arrangements based on business needs.


Required Qualifications

  • Education: Graduate in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine

  • Certification: AAPC or AHIMA certification (CIC preferred)

  • Experience:

    • 5+ years in Acute Care Inpatient medical coding (hospital/facility)

    • Exposure to Level I trauma centers and/or teaching hospitals

    • Expertise with complex cases: major trauma ER, cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology, orthopedic, neurology, and observation coding

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in ICD-10 (CM & PCS) and DRG coding

  • Knowledge of system security and compliance policies
