Location: Indiana (Remote; Onsite Training Required)

Role Overview

As a Medical Scribe at Oak Street Health, you'll play a critical role in supporting primary care providers with clinical documentation. You'll observe patient visits, document encounters, and ensure that patient records are accurate and complete. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals pursuing careers in healthcare, especially pre-med students or those interested in medical coding, health informatics, or healthcare administration.

Responsibilities

  • Documenting Patient Encounters (~80%)

    • Join the provider in the exam room to document the patient’s history, physical exam, and assessments.
    • Assign appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes.
    • Prepare After Visit Summaries.
    • Collaborate with providers to ensure accurate documentation.
  • Clinical Documentation Improvement (~10%)

    • Request and review medical records to support documentation improvement.
    • Assist in daily huddles and clinical documentation reviews.
  • Administrative Support (~10%)

    • Place orders and referrals.
    • Support additional administrative tasks related to clinical documentation.

Requirements

  • Education & Experience

    • Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications, either through pre-med education or prior clinical experience.
    • Prior clinical experience (shadowing, volunteering, or scribing) preferred but not required.
    • Typing speed of 70+ words per minute preferred.
  • Skills & Abilities

    • Strong listening and communication skills.
    • Ability to learn new workflows and systems quickly.
    • Excellent computer literacy.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
    • Ability to commit to at least 1 year in the role (2+ years preferred).
  • Other Requirements

    • Fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other languages is a plus.
    • Willingness to attend onsite training for 2 weeks.
    • Must be able to work full-time (40-45 hours/week) and commit to a predictable work schedule.
