Roche is seeking a Regional Medical Expert (RME) – Ophthalmology to strengthen its medical engagement and frontline scientific exchange across the region. This field-based Medical Affairs position plays a critical role in shaping medical strategy, scientific understanding, and stakeholder partnerships.


Position Summary

The Regional Medical Expert is responsible for driving high-quality scientific interactions with healthcare professionals, institutions, and key accounts. Operating under the Medical Chapter Lead (MCL) and in close partnership with Disease Area Medical Leads (DAMLs) and Disease Area Squad Leads (DASLs), the RME ensures consistent execution of regional medical plans and delivers timely field insights that influence strategic medical decision-making.

This role is primarily focused on Ophthalmology, with a base location in Kolkata.


Key Responsibilities

Field Engagement and Scientific Exchange

  • Execute regional HCP and account engagement plans aligned with national and cluster-level medical strategies.

  • Build and maintain peer-level scientific relationships with ophthalmology specialists, KOLs, and institutional stakeholders.

  • Facilitate accurate, evidence-based scientific exchange regarding Roche’s ophthalmology portfolio.

Insight Generation and Strategy Support

  • Identify, document, and communicate actionable medical insights to DAMLs, Medical Experts, and the Medical Chapter Lead.

  • Support the planning and execution of advisory boards, scientific meetings, and medical education initiatives.

  • Contribute to discussions and initiatives supporting real-world evidence (RWE) generation, observational studies, registries, and investigator-initiated studies (IIS).

Clinical Research and Evidence Development

  • Assist in identifying potential investigators and clinical trial sites.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support clinical operations, medical strategy, and field-based evidence initiatives.

Congresses and Medical Activities

  • Represent Roche Medical at local and regional scientific congresses, academic conferences, and professional society meetings.

  • Ensure all external engagements and scientific communications adhere to Roche SOPs, UCPMP regulations, and applicable national guidelines.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with regional and national medical teams to align field activities with broader medical objectives.

  • Remain flexible to support other therapeutic areas when needed while maintaining primary focus on Ophthalmology.


Required Skills and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced scientific or medical degree: MBBS, MD, PharmD, PhD, or MPharm.

  • 2–4 years of experience in Medical Affairs, clinical practice, or related scientific field.

  • Prior field-based experience (e.g., MSL role) is strongly preferred.

  • Strong understanding of clinical research methodologies and evidence generation frameworks (RWE, observational studies).

  • Ability to engage confidently in scientific discussions with HCPs and opinion leaders.

Preferred Expertise

  • Background in Ophthalmology, with prior exposure to Vitreo-Retinal therapy areas considered an advantage.

  • Knowledge of the Indian healthcare ecosystem, institutional networks, and scientific landscape.

  • High learning agility with the capability to rapidly acquire disease-area expertise.

  • Willingness to travel extensively (60–70 percent field time).
