Job Overview

AstraZeneca is seeking a highly qualified Regional Medical Advisor (R&I) to join its Medical Affairs team in Kolkata, India. This field-based role is responsible for executing the regional Medical Affairs strategy for pre-launch and newly launched therapies. The position focuses on scientific engagement with healthcare professionals, key external experts, and healthcare ecosystem stakeholders to improve patient outcomes and promote the safe and effective use of innovative medicines.

The Regional Medical Advisor will serve as a scientific expert within the assigned therapeutic area and geographic territory. The role involves building strategic partnerships with healthcare professionals, key external experts (KEEs), researchers, and policymakers while collaborating closely with internal cross-functional teams including medical, regulatory, pharmacovigilance, and commercial functions.

This position plays a critical role in translating clinical evidence into practice through scientific exchange, evidence generation, and strategic medical insights that support AstraZeneca’s mission to advance healthcare innovation and patient access to life-changing treatments.

Key Responsibilities

Scientific Engagement and Medical Strategy

  • Execute the Medical Affairs strategic plan for assigned therapeutic areas and product portfolios.

  • Engage in scientific discussions with healthcare professionals, key external experts, and medical stakeholders to share evidence-based medical information.

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of disease states, clinical guidelines, emerging therapies, and AstraZeneca products.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP).

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and provide scientific guidance to both internal and external stakeholders.

Scientific Exchange and Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Conduct peer-to-peer scientific dialogue with healthcare professionals and clinical experts.

  • Deliver presentations, lectures, and scientific updates during medical events, conferences, and advisory boards.

  • Organize scientific activities such as symposia, expert panels, scientific exchanges, and educational programs for healthcare professionals.

  • Respond to medical inquiries with balanced, evidence-based information that supports the appropriate use of AstraZeneca therapies.

  • Collaborate with key external experts on research initiatives, study proposals, and scientific publications.

Medical Insights and Evidence Generation

  • Identify and analyze insights from healthcare professionals and medical stakeholders to support strategic decision-making.

  • Provide actionable insights to internal teams regarding product strategy, clinical development, and patient care pathways.

  • Support investigator-initiated studies, evidence generation initiatives, and clinical research collaborations.

  • Identify clinical investigators and research partners aligned with ongoing medical programs.

Strategic Partnerships and Healthcare Ecosystem Engagement

  • Develop strong peer-level relationships with healthcare professionals, researchers, and key opinion leaders.

  • Engage with non-traditional stakeholders such as policymakers, government bodies, patient advocacy groups, and healthcare innovators where appropriate.

  • Identify opportunities to improve patient access and healthcare delivery within the regional ecosystem.

  • Support initiatives that drive sustainable improvements in clinical practice and patient outcomes.

Compliance, Safety and Governance

  • Ensure adherence to AstraZeneca policies, ethical interaction standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain knowledge of pharmacovigilance, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and GxP standards.

  • Support appropriate reporting of adverse events and ensure compliance with local regulatory guidelines.

  • Follow internal SOPs and global field medical standards during scientific interactions and activities.

Education and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a scientific discipline such as Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine, or related fields.

  • Doctoral degree (MD, PhD, PharmD) is preferred but not mandatory.

Experience Required

  • Typically 3–6 years of experience in Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, Medical Science Liaison roles, or related positions within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.

  • Experience interacting with healthcare professionals, clinical investigators, or key opinion leaders is highly desirable.

  • Prior exposure to clinical research, drug development, regulatory environments, or therapeutic area expertise is advantageous.
