Job Overview

AstraZeneca is hiring a Regional Medical Advisor (Oncology) to support its Medical Affairs operations in Chennai, India. This field-based role focuses on executing the regional medical strategy for oncology products and indications, particularly for newly launched or pre-launch therapies. The position plays a critical role in driving scientific engagement with healthcare professionals, key opinion leaders, and healthcare ecosystem stakeholders to improve patient outcomes and ensure the safe and effective use of AstraZeneca oncology medicines.

The Regional Medical Advisor acts as a scientific expert in the assigned therapeutic area and geographical region. The role involves building strong professional relationships with oncologists, researchers, and medical experts while collaborating with internal cross-functional teams including Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Pharmacovigilance, and Commercial functions. The position also contributes to medical strategy execution through scientific exchange, evidence generation, and insight gathering from the healthcare community.

Key Responsibilities

Medical Strategy and Scientific Expertise

  • Execute Medical Affairs plans for oncology therapies within the assigned region.

  • Maintain strong scientific expertise in oncology disease areas, treatment guidelines, AstraZeneca products, and emerging therapies.

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP).

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for internal stakeholders and external healthcare professionals.

  • Support internal training initiatives and knowledge sharing within the therapeutic area.

Scientific Engagement and Knowledge Exchange

  • Engage in peer-to-peer scientific dialogue with oncologists, healthcare professionals, and medical experts.

  • Deliver clinical and scientific presentations during conferences, symposia, advisory boards, and educational meetings.

  • Provide balanced, evidence-based responses to medical inquiries from healthcare professionals.

  • Organize and support scientific events such as medical symposia, advisory boards, expert panels, and educational sessions.

  • Collaborate with key external experts on clinical research proposals and scientific publications.

Medical Insights and Evidence Generation

  • Gather and analyze insights from healthcare professionals and key stakeholders to support medical and product strategies.

  • Share actionable insights with internal teams to support clinical development and patient care initiatives.

  • Identify potential investigators for clinical, pre-clinical, and post-marketing research studies.

  • Support investigator-sponsored studies and local evidence generation initiatives.

Strategic Relationship Development

  • Build strong peer-level relationships with oncologists, clinical researchers, and healthcare professionals.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to engage broader healthcare ecosystem stakeholders including policy makers, research institutions, and patient advocacy groups where relevant.

  • Identify opportunities to improve patient access and optimize treatment pathways within the oncology care ecosystem.

  • Establish long-term partnerships that contribute to sustainable improvements in patient care and clinical practice.

Compliance, Safety and Governance

  • Ensure adherence to AstraZeneca ethical standards, global field medical guidelines, and local regulatory requirements.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacovigilance, GxP standards, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).

  • Ensure proper reporting of adverse events and maintain compliance with internal SOPs and regulatory requirements.

  • Follow compliance guidelines for scientific exchange and promotional activities.

Education and Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Medicine, or a related scientific discipline.

  • Doctoral degree such as MD, PhD, or PharmD is preferred.

Experience Required

  • Typically 3 to 6 years of experience in Medical Affairs, Medical Science Liaison, Clinical Research, or related roles within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.

  • Experience in oncology therapeutic area and interaction with healthcare professionals or key opinion leaders is highly desirable.

  • Exposure to clinical research, drug development, or regulatory environments is an advantage.
