About Bayer
Bayer is a global life sciences company focused on advancing healthcare and agriculture through scientific innovation. The organization operates across pharmaceuticals, consumer health, and crop science, delivering solutions that improve health outcomes and enhance quality of life worldwide.

Within the pharmaceutical division, Bayer’s Research and Development teams focus on accelerating drug discovery, clinical development, and regulatory innovation by leveraging advanced data technologies, analytics, and digital transformation strategies.

Job Overview
Bayer is seeking an experienced R&D Data Management – Reference Data Technology Steward to support the development and governance of reference data standards across the Research and Development ecosystem.

This role plays a critical part in ensuring that both internally generated and externally sourced scientific data follow FAIR+Q principles—making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable, and of high Quality. The position supports the implementation of enterprise data capabilities including business information modeling, data architecture, and reference data governance.

The selected professional will manage reference data standards using Bayer’s enterprise platforms such as OneEDG (based on TopQuadrant’s TopBraid EDG) and MARLAY, a Databricks-based data solution. While the role involves technical oversight of ontology structures and data frameworks, it is primarily business-facing and focuses on collaboration across R&D teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a bridge between the R&D Data Strategy and Governance team, scientific data users, and IT implementation teams to support the creation and maintenance of reference and master data assets in OneEDG.

  • Collaborate with business data stewards and stakeholders across R&D to evaluate reference data requirements and their impact on business processes.

  • Ensure that the technical infrastructure supporting reference data—including systems, architecture, and tools—aligns with business objectives and enterprise data strategies.

  • Design and implement reference data solutions such as semantic models, ontology frameworks, and AI-driven data structures that support research workflows.

  • Implement business-defined data mappings, including industry classifications and management hierarchies, to support consistent reporting and analytics.

  • Create new data structures and update existing structures within OneEDG and MARLAY for effective lifecycle management of reference data.

  • Perform limited system configuration tasks in OneEDG through its user interface, such as adding columns or adjusting data structures without requiring coding.

  • Oversee reference data workflows from ingestion to downstream consumption across R&D business processes, ensuring traceability and governance.

  • Develop and maintain documentation related to data definitions, metadata, data flows, and ontology models.

  • Provide training and guidance to R&D teams on reference data management tools and governance practices.

  • Promote the adoption of data standards, governance frameworks, and best practices across scientific and operational teams.

Stakeholder Collaboration
This role will work closely with a broad network of stakeholders including:

  • Research Biology and Translational Science teams (including CVRI and Oncology research groups)

  • Drug Discovery and Preclinical Research teams

  • Pharmaceutical Sciences, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, and Pharmacovigilance teams

  • Laboratory scientists, data scientists, clinicians, statisticians, and operational professionals

  • Data architects, data engineers, product and platform teams

  • External vendors and contract partners supporting data management initiatives

Required Skills and Expertise

  • Extensive experience in data modeling methodologies including relational, object-oriented, and graph-based models.

  • Strong knowledge of ontologies, semantic data modeling, knowledge graphs, and metadata management within the biomedical domain.

  • Familiarity with industry data standards such as NCIT, NCBI, SPOR, CDISC, IDMP, and USDM.

  • Experience working with enterprise data platforms and technologies including AWS, Databricks, and ontology management systems such as TopBraid EDG.

  • Working knowledge of programming and data query languages including SQL, Python, and SPARQL.

  • Understanding of ontology standards and semantic web technologies such as OWL, SKOS, and SHACL.

  • Strong expertise in data governance frameworks including access management, data quality control, and enterprise data catalogs.

  • Experience designing high-level ETL pipelines and managing complex life sciences datasets.

Professional Competencies

  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving capabilities.

  • Ability to manage complex projects and collaborate across scientific, technical, and business teams.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

  • High adaptability and learning agility in dynamic and evolving R&D environments.

  • Proven ability to work independently while influencing diverse stakeholders in large global organizations.
