Job Summary

Apotex is seeking a Microbiologist to support Quality Services within its Global Quality Control Microbiology Testing Laboratory Services. Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, this role is responsible for performing microbiological testing of finished pharmaceutical products, raw materials, water samples, and stability samples across commercial and R&D programs. The position ensures accurate, compliant, and timely generation of microbiological data in accordance with GMP, GLP, compendial, and internal standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiological testing of non-sterile finished products, raw materials, water samples, and stability samples

  • Execute antimicrobial effectiveness testing, bacterial isolate identification, and media growth promotion studies

  • Ensure all microbiological testing is conducted in compliance with GMP, GLP, SOPs, compendial, and regulatory requirements

  • Maintain proficiency in microbiological techniques, including aseptic practices and routine laboratory procedures

  • Assist senior microbiologists with protocol execution and laboratory investigations

  • Utilize laboratory systems such as LIMS, SAP, and Microapps for documentation and data management

  • Verify microbiological test results, calculations, and peer-generated data with high attention to detail

  • Communicate out-of-specification (OOS) and out-of-trend (OOT) results promptly to supervisors

  • Support troubleshooting of methodologies, instrumentation, and laboratory processes

  • Coordinate availability of laboratory supplies, consumables, and equipment

  • Maintain compliance with assigned training plans and laboratory safety standards

  • Support a collaborative and positive laboratory work environment

  • Perform routine bench work including pipetting, serial dilutions, and sub-culturing

  • Participate in sample collection activities within manufacturing or mechanical areas as required

  • Support shift rotations, including evening or weekend coverage, based on operational needs


Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or a closely related scientific discipline


Experience Required

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a microbiology laboratory environment

  • Prior experience within the pharmaceutical or regulated industry is strongly preferred


Required Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical microbiology and non-sterile product testing

  • Working knowledge of compendial microbiological requirements

  • Familiarity with automated laboratory instruments such as MALDI-TOF, autoclaves, sterility test isolators, and bacterial endotoxin testing systems (e.g., Endoscan)

  • Proficiency in aseptic techniques and standard microbiological methods

  • Experience with LIMS and laboratory documentation systems is an advantage

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

  • High attention to detail with effective problem-solving abilities

  • Strong commitment to GMP, GLP, and quality-driven laboratory practices


Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual Salary Range: CAD 48,367.89 – 59,395.52

  • Final compensation will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience
