Job Summary

The Medical Records Audit Specialist is responsible for managing, auditing, and maintaining patient medical records with precision, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance. This role supports the revenue cycle and healthcare delivery by reviewing, organizing, and verifying medical documentation in both electronic and paper formats. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and understanding of healthcare privacy laws while collaborating effectively with healthcare providers, administrative teams, and payers.


Key Responsibilities

  • Audit and review patient medical records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Ensure timely retrieval and submission of medical records for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Verify demographics, insurance, and billing information for accuracy and cross-reference with billing and authorization systems.

  • Utilize multiple Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems to gather and manage medical documentation.

  • Follow up with healthcare providers and payers to confirm receipt of records and resolve discrepancies.

  • Maintain organized and secure patient records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and other relevant regulations.

  • Document audit findings, follow-up actions, and maintain meticulous records in company systems (e.g., Zealie Zion).

  • Assist with departmental functions, including claim follow-ups and supporting revenue cycle processes.

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills when interacting with internal teams, external clients, and insurance carriers.


Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience: 2–5 years in medical records management, medical billing, or revenue cycle management (RCC).

  • Proficiency in EHR systems, medical coding, and payer portals.

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, healthcare regulations, and privacy laws.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational, and analytical skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive information professionally.

  • Experience in record scanning, review, and quality assurance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Health Information Management or related field.

  • Experience in behavioral health billing and familiarity with substance abuse and mental health treatment documentation.

  • Prior experience in remote work settings and collaborating with distributed teams.
