Role Overview

The Medical Physicist will be responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and regulatory-compliant delivery of radiation therapy services. This includes quality assurance of radiotherapy (RT) equipment, patient-specific dosimetry, radiation safety compliance, equipment commissioning, and coordination with regulatory authorities such as AERB.

The role is critical to maintaining precision in treatment planning, radiation monitoring, and adherence to radiation protection standards in oncology practice.

Educational Qualification

  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Medical Physics or relevant specialization preferred

Experience Required

  • 5–8 years of experience in radiation oncology or medical physics

  • Hands-on experience with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and brachytherapy

  • Experience in AERB regulatory compliance and radiation safety management

  • Expertise in CT, MRI, and PET image processing for radiotherapy planning

  • Prior experience in equipment commissioning and QA programs is preferred

Key Responsibilities

Radiotherapy Equipment Management

  • Ensure optimum performance, calibration, and maintenance of radiotherapy (RT) equipment

  • Plan new installations and modifications in line with regulatory requirements

  • Prepare technical specifications for procurement of new RT equipment

  • Oversee acceptance testing and commissioning of equipment

  • Maintain equipment logbooks and documentation

Quality Assurance & Dosimetry

  • Establish and operate comprehensive QA programs (daily, weekly, monthly, biannual)

  • Conduct patient-specific dosimetry and maintain accurate QA records

  • Calibrate radioactivity and dose-measuring instruments with traceability to national standards

  • Supervise brachytherapy source transfer operations and calibration

  • Maintain inventory and disposal records of brachytherapy sources

Treatment Planning & Clinical Support

  • Supervise simulation, planning, and execution of external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy

  • Process CT, MRI, and PET imaging data for radiotherapy planning

  • Monitor High Dose I-131 therapy patients in Nuclear Medicine department

Radiation Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Obtain and maintain regulatory approvals from AERB for RT equipment operations

  • Monitor radiation installations including RT, X-ray, and CT units

  • Conduct personnel radiation monitoring and maintain dose records

  • Maintain health records of radiation workers

  • Prepare Annual Radiation Safety Status Reports as per AERB/BARC guidelines

  • Ensure display of radiation warning symbols at all radiological installations

  • Maintain survey records, emergency documentation, and exposure incident reports

  • Coordinate Radiation Safety Committee meetings as Member Secretary and submit reports to AERB

Coordination & Administration

  • Liaise with consultants, equipment vendors, biomedical teams, maintenance departments, and regulatory authorities

  • Support general administrative responsibilities related to radiation safety and oncology services

Core Competencies

  • Strong understanding of radiotherapy physics and radiation protection principles

  • In-depth knowledge of AERB and BARC regulations

  • Expertise in quality assurance and dosimetry protocols

  • Analytical mindset with high attention to detail
