Role Overview

Under direct supervision, the Surgery Coder is responsible for accurate coding of diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers from medical records in hospital or clinic settings.

Coding must follow:

  • ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines

  • CPT guidelines

  • HCPCS Level II coding

  • CMS updates

  • NCCI Edits

  • AHA Coding Clinic references

  • Client-specific coding guidelines


Primary Responsibilities

Coding & Documentation

  • Review and abstract relevant medical record data.

  • Assign appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II codes, and modifiers.

  • Code for multispecialty outpatient surgery centers and hospitals.

  • Achieve productivity of 4–6 charts per hour with required quality standards.

Compliance & Guidelines

  • Track and apply updates from AMA, AHA, and CMS guidelines.

  • Ensure correct CPT selection and proper modifier assignment according to NCCI edits.

  • Review NCCI edits, LCD/NCD coverage, and adjust codes accordingly.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

  • Follow all company policies, procedures, and contract terms.

Teamwork & Process Management

  • Collaborate effectively within large coding teams.

  • Provide inputs to support performance improvement.

  • Organize and prioritize workload to meet compliance timelines.

  • Maintain system security and uphold data protection standards.


Required Qualifications

🎓 Education

  • Graduate in Life Sciences (mandatory)

🏅 Certifications

  • Valid coding certification from AAPC or AHIMA

  • Accepted certifications: CPC, CCS, CIC, COC (any one)

  • Must provide certification proof and ID number during interview/offer process

🧠 Experience

  • Minimum 6+ months coding experience in:

    • Multispecialty Surgery

    • Surgery + E&M coding

  • Hands-on experience in surgical specialties such as:
    Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Otolaryngology, etc.

📚 Technical Knowledge

  • ICD-10-CM

  • CPT

  • HCPCS Level II

  • Modifiers

  • Medical terminology

  • Human anatomy & physiology
