Job Description:

The Medical Assistant I is responsible for performing front office and back office functions, ensuring smooth patient flow, and maintaining compliance with state regulations.

Responsibilities:

Front Office Duties:

  • Answer phones, schedule appointments, and verify eligibility.

  • Assist with medication refills and record phone notes for patients.

  • Address incoming and outgoing faxes.

  • No clinical work or hands-on patient care.

Back Office Duties:

  • Assist providers during patient visits and procedures (Pap smears, minor surgical procedures, etc.).

  • Intake and record health and immunization history.

  • Prepare patients for exams or procedures.

  • Administer screenings (hearing/vision tests) and immunizations.

  • Perform venipuncture, blood draws, and administer injections.

Administrative and Training Responsibilities:

  • Cross-train new personnel on front desk and back office duties.

  • Work autonomously and make decisions in the absence of the Supervisor/Administrator.

  • Provide guidance to staff and offer performance feedback to management.

  • Ensure compliance with State Regulatory programs and required documentation.

Other Duties:

  • Manage patient documentation and logs.

  • Handle prescription refills and ensure timely completion of call backs.

  • Confirm appointment reminder calls daily.

  • Participate in community outreach events to foster enrollment growth.

  • Contribute to patient satisfaction and address staffing shortages.

  • Cover rotational Saturday clinic hours as needed.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Medical Assistant duties (front and back office) and medical terminology.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multicultural environment with multiple providers.

  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficiency in typing and database systems.

  • Knowledge of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Practice Management (PM) systems preferred.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA/PHI regulations.

  • Bilingual preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Required Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Required Experience: 0-2 years of Medical Assistant experience.

  • Preferred: Certified Medical Assistant (MA).
