About the Role

Role Title: Manager – Competitive Intelligence, R&D
Reporting to: Director / Sr. Director, Competitive Intelligence

In this critical role, you will drive intelligence-gathering initiatives for Amgen’s marketing teams, supporting multiple assets across business units. You will partner with R&D, Commercial, and Legal stakeholders to generate actionable insights that inform strategy and decision-making.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver Competitive Intelligence (CI) reports and insights for cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Utilize diverse secondary research tools such as clinicaltrials.gov, TrialTrove, BioMedTracker, Cortellis Intelligence, Evaluate Pharma, Datamonitor, IPD Analytics, PharmaProjects, Drugs@FDA, PubMed, AlphaSense, Factset, and USPTO patents.

  • Collaborate with R&D leaders to define Key Intelligence Topics (KITs) and Key Intelligence Questions (KIQs).

  • Conduct both primary and secondary hypothesis-driven CI research.

  • Capture and synthesize insights from scientific and medical conferences, producing detailed reports for internal teams.

  • Analyze U.S. patent landscapes related to early drug development.

  • Manage CI vendors for primary intelligence gathering, engaging with KOLs, investigators, MSLs, physicians, field force, investor relations, and other relevant sources.

  • Support scenario development for competitor launch timing across major global markets (U.S., EU, Japan, China, etc.).

  • Provide CI inputs into pharmaceutical forecasting, long-range planning, go/no-go decisions, and BD assessments.

  • Travel requirement: ~5%.


Basic Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree with 4+ years’ experience in Competitive Intelligence, Business Development, Tech Transfer, Equity Research, Consulting, or Patent Law
    OR

  • Master’s degree with 6+ years’ experience in the above fields
    OR

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years’ experience in the above fields


Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree with 7+ years’ experience in CI, BD, Tech Transfer, Equity Research, Consulting, or Patent Law

  • Master’s degree with 9+ years’ experience in the same domains

  • Bachelor’s degree with 13+ years’ experience in the same domains

  • Strong communication skills with ability to distill complex scientific data into actionable insights.

  • Proven expertise in early pipeline development, BD CI, R&D CI, equity research, tech transfer, or patent law.

  • In-depth understanding of the pharmaceutical value chain including:

    • Drug discovery & development

    • Clinical trials

    • FDA/EMA regulations

    • Drug commercialization

  • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects simultaneously using proprietary data sources.

  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional R&D, commercial, and medical teams to shape therapeutic strategies.

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical forecasting and competitive assumption modeling.
