Role Summary

The Inpatient Coding Supervisor manages inpatient coding staff, oversees coding operations, ensures compliance with laws and regulatory requirements, and fosters a high-performing work environment. Remote work is supported.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage activities of the coding staff, including scheduling, assignments, monitoring productivity and quality assurance, and ensuring key metrics are met.

  • Supervise inpatient coders.

  • Serve as a resource to coding staff, Revenue Integrity, and other hospital departments.

  • Audit, train, and supervise coding staff to maximize reimbursement, ensure quality coding, and maintain turnaround times.

  • Develop and motivate staff, support recruitment and retention efforts.

  • Complete probationary and annual employee performance evaluations.

  • Respond to requests from hospital departments, physicians, patients, and families to ensure excellent customer service.

  • Communicate effectively across organizational levels, including with physicians, CFOs, and hospital department management.

  • Ensure knowledge of information privacy laws, medical record access, and release of information.

  • Assist the Coding Manager in improving DNFB and Coding Revenue Cycle performance, including staffing, reports, daily assignments, and coding support.

  • Lead by example and promote teamwork, transparency, and a results-focused environment.

  • Develop project work plans, facilitate resource allocation, execute tasks, and coordinate intra- and inter-departmental resources.

  • Conduct special projects as assigned by Optum leadership.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher).

  • Professional coder certification from AHIMA and/or AAPC (CCS, RHIA, RHIT), maintained annually.

  • 3+ years coding experience with ICD-10-PCS & DRG.

  • 1+ year leadership/management experience.

  • Intermediate proficiency with electronic health records, computer-assisted coding software, and encoders.

  • Flexibility to work across multiple time zones as required.


Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of leadership experience.

  • Ability to multitask.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and Smartsheets.

  • Telecommuting adherence as per UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $58,800–$105,000 annually (full-time basis).

  • Comprehensive benefits package, incentives, recognition programs, equity stock purchase, and 401k contributions (eligibility applies).
