The Opportunity – Infectious Disease (ID) Business Unit

The Head of Medical Affairs & Scientific Affairs will lead and integrate the Medical and Scientific Affairs functions for Abbott’s Infectious Disease (ID) business unit.
Reporting directly to the Business Unit President, this role will contribute strategically to innovation, R&D pipeline planning, and global business growth.

You will serve as the key medical representative to regulatory agencies, professional organizations, and key opinion leaders (KOLs) — ensuring scientific integrity, compliance, and medical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead and integrate Medical Affairs and Scientific Affairs functions.

  • Develop, implement, and streamline processes, procedures, and tools to support the Infectious Disease (ID) business.

  • Provide strategic direction and rationale for new product introductions and sustaining existing products.

  • Assess emerging and unmet medical needs, and identify innovation and disruptive technology opportunities.

Medical & Scientific Governance

  • Review and approve medical opinions, platform documents, Health Hazard Assessments, and customer education materials.

  • Provide medical and scientific support during direct customer interactions.

  • Ensure compliance with Office of Ethics and Compliance guidelines.

  • Lead a team of medical and scientific directors, providing mentorship and strategic oversight.

External Representation & Collaboration

  • Act as the primary medical representative to external regulatory agencies and professional organizations.

  • Drive global medical and scientific strategy, KOL partnerships, key agency interactions, and post-market surveillance efforts.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Global Marketing, Research, Assay Development, Regulatory Affairs, and Commercial to align medical direction with business goals.


Required Qualifications

Requirement

Details

Education

MD degree with clinical experience in Infectious Diseases

Experience

Minimum 10 years of medical/clinical experience, including 5+ years in industry

Knowledge

Strong understanding of regulations and standards for IVDs and Biologics

Expertise

Deep knowledge of product development, industry operations, and customer insights

Leadership

Proven ability to lead organizations, apply strategic thinking, and mentor teams

Professional Standing

Respected KOL and well-published in the field of infectious diseases


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in global markets, especially developed regions.


Compensation

💼 Base Pay Range:
$188,700 – $377,300
