About the Role

The Associate Director / Executive Director / Senior Director – Clinical Business Development (Core) plays a pivotal role in driving commercial growth across assigned geographic territories and strategic client accounts. This leadership position combines strategic account management with proactive new business development to expand Syneos Health’s footprint within the global biopharmaceutical and clinical research industry.

The role focuses on building long-term client partnerships, delivering customized clinical development solutions, and leveraging data-driven insights to maximize territory performance. Success in this position requires strong industry knowledge, consultative selling expertise, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally to deliver high-impact, client-centric outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute an annual sales and territory plan, including forecasting, goal setting, and quarterly performance reviews.

  • Identify and prioritize high-value accounts using data-driven market and opportunity analysis.

  • Establish and manage monthly and quarterly sales objectives aligned with overall business strategy.

  • Create and maintain comprehensive strategic account plans focused on client challenges, growth opportunities, and solution alignment.

  • Build, manage, and expand trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders, decision-makers, and influencers.

  • Design and deliver customized, multi-touchpoint sales and engagement strategies based on client needs and market dynamics.

  • Drive account expansion initiatives, including renewals, therapeutic alignment, and next-phase clinical opportunities.

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders across operations, therapeutic strategy, deal strategy, and delivery teams to develop tailored solutions.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date sales pipelines, forecasts, and client activity records using CRM systems such as Salesforce.

  • Act as a client advocate internally by sharing insights on client culture, priorities, and decision-making processes.

  • Represent Syneos Health at client meetings, industry conferences, and professional events to strengthen brand presence.

  • Monitor industry trends, competitive activity, and evolving client needs to refine business development strategies.


Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline; equivalent experience considered.

  • Advanced degree preferred, such as an MBA or Master’s in Life Sciences.

  • Clinical research industry experience required, with a strong understanding of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical development.

  • In-depth knowledge of the drug development lifecycle, clinical trial operations, and clinical research service offerings.

  • Proven success in B2B consultative selling, including complex solution sales and enterprise-level account management.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage and influence mid- to executive-level stakeholders.

  • Strong strategic thinking, commercial acumen, and data-driven decision-making capabilities.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and organizational skills.

  • High proficiency with CRM platforms (Salesforce preferred), MS Office Suite, and Google Workspace.

  • Willingness to travel approximately 30% for client engagements and industry events.


Experience Requirements by Level

  • Associate Director: 8–10 years of experience in clinical business development or related sales roles within CRO or biopharma environments.

  • Executive Director: 10–14 years of progressive experience leading strategic accounts and driving territory growth in clinical research services.

  • Senior Director: 14+ years of senior-level commercial leadership experience with a proven record of large account expansion and revenue growth.
