Position Summary

The Coding Supervisor is responsible for leading and managing the daily operations of the Coding Department, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance across all coding activities. This role focuses on supervising Coding Associates, monitoring productivity, implementing policies, and maintaining high-quality standards in coding, billing, and documentation practices.

This position requires strong leadership skills, deep knowledge of multispecialty coding, and the ability to ensure adherence to federal, state, and payer regulations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate the daily workflow of Coding Associates, including coding edits and denials.

  • Assign tasks, manage workload distribution, and monitor productivity across the team.

  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and support.

  • Respond to coding-related inquiries from Associates, Auditors, and clients.

  • Develop, implement, and refine department procedures to improve accuracy and workflow efficiency.

  • Prepare operational reports, status updates, and correspondence for management review.

  • Interview, train, motivate, and recognize Coding department staff.

  • Manage disciplinary issues and escalate when necessary.

  • Support implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, Managed Care, and regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure proper usage, protection, and disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI) per HIPAA guidelines.

  • Maintain compliance with Information Security and HIPAA standards at all times.

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by management.


Experience Required

  • 2–4 years of relevant experience in medical coding or related healthcare functions.

  • 1–3 years of supervisory or team leadership experience in a coding environment.

  • Hands-on experience with multispecialty coding, including CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS.

  • Experience working with Medicare, Medicaid, and Managed Care billing guidelines.

  • Recent and relevant training or work experience within the last 5 years.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with healthcare billing systems.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent education and experience.

  • Valid coding certification: CPC or CCS (AAPC or AHIMA).

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and make sound, timely decisions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across all organizational levels.

  • High integrity, accountability, and a strong sense of urgency.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional travel to client sites may be required.

  • Must have a smartphone or electronic device capable of supporting secure authentication applications.
