Trainer – Medical Coding

Job Summary

The Trainer – Medical Coding is responsible for delivering structured training programs in HCC coding, supporting coder development, and ensuring adherence to payer guidelines and compliance standards. The role involves interpreting medical records, guiding denial management processes, and strengthening coder competency through continuous education and performance monitoring.

Key Responsibilities

Training Delivery & Development

  • Deliver structured training programs for HCC coding as per defined training agenda.

  • Train and mentor medical coders on ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding standards.

  • Conduct onboarding and continuous education sessions for coders and auditors.

  • Support capability development of client teams to meet operational ramp-up targets.

Medical Coding & Documentation Review

  • Interpret medical records across multiple specialties.

  • Provide appropriate coding interpretations and denial management actions.

  • Ensure accurate application of coding conventions and payer-specific rules.

  • Support coders in understanding complex clinical documentation.

Payer Guidelines & Compliance

  • Research and interpret payer-specific guidelines.

  • Collate accurate coding and reimbursement-related information.

  • Ensure adherence to compliance requirements and regulatory standards.

  • Assist in internal compliance audits for coding teams.

Denial Management Support

  • Analyze denial cases and provide corrective coding actions.

  • Train teams on denial prevention strategies and resolution techniques.

  • Support improvement in claims acceptance and coding accuracy.

Quality Monitoring & Reporting

  • Monitor trainee performance and provide feedback for improvement.

  • Report training outcomes and progress to management and client stakeholders.

  • Assist in identifying skill gaps and developing targeted learning interventions.

Industry Awareness & Continuous Learning

  • Stay updated with changes in medical coding guidelines and payer policies.

  • Incorporate industry updates into training modules and delivery content.

  • Ensure training content remains current and aligned with regulatory updates.

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in medical coding training (HCC focus preferred).

  • Hands-on experience in HCC coding and denial management.

  • Experience in mentoring or training medical coding professionals.

Certification

  • Certified coder from AAPC or AHIMA (mandatory).

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • ICD-10-CM coding system

    • CPT coding conventions

    • HCPCS coding standards

  • Understanding of HCC coding methodologies.

  • Familiarity with Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) processes.
