Job Title: Veterinary Scientist

Core Purpose of the Role:

The Veterinary Scientist will support the safety assessment vivarium program, providing veterinary medical care, managing animal care staff, and ensuring ethical animal use by promoting the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). The role will focus on maintaining AAALAC standards, ensuring regulatory compliance, and overseeing vivarium operations. The incumbent will manage day-to-day operational and administrative activities, ensuring all processes are executed within required timelines.


Role Accountabilities:

  • Clinical and Health Monitoring:
    Oversee the health and clinical monitoring of laboratory animals, ensuring that all procedures and practices align with Animal Welfare Regulations and AAALAC standards.

  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Ensure that all vivarium operations comply with regulatory standards such as CPCSEA and GLP.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration:
    Manage and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet discovery and regulatory requirements.

  • Animal Import and Quarantine Procedures:
    Coordinate the importation and quarantine of animals, ensuring all protocols are followed.

  • Team Management:
    Supervise and train animal care technicians and other team members involved in vivarium operations.

  • Protocol Design and Research Support:
    Participate in designing and reviewing research protocols and assist in studies where necessary.

  • Resource Management:
    Ensure all necessary resources are available for efficient day-to-day operations of the vivarium.

  • Continuous Improvement:
    Support continuous improvement initiatives within the vivarium, including biosecurity measures, sentinel programs, and maintenance of SPF (Specific Pathogen-Free) animals.

  • Veterinary Support:
    Assist the Attending Veterinarian (AV) and facility veterinarians with daily operations.

  • Facility Management:
    Responsible for capacity utilization, optimizing vivarium maintenance, and ensuring operational efficiency.

  • Outreach and Education:
    Contribute to outreach efforts, educational programs, and publications related to vivarium operations and animal welfare.
