About the Role:
Optum, a part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Inpatient Coding at its Chennai location. As a senior medical coder, you will play a critical role in ensuring accurate assignment of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes that directly impact DRG outcomes. If you bring extensive acute care coding experience, this is your opportunity to contribute to a global leader in health services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accurately assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient hospital services, with attention to DRG, CC/MCC identification per official and client coding guidelines.

  • Maintain coding productivity of 1.5–2.5 charts per hour while adhering to quality benchmarks.

  • Provide documentation feedback and query physicians when necessary for clarification.

  • Abstract additional data elements during chart review, contributing to thorough documentation.

  • Stay current with AHA guideline updates and disseminated resources from QM and operations managers.

  • Participate actively in departmental meetings and educational sessions to promote continuous learning.

  • Maintain a coding log to track charts coded, held, or pending.

  • Work collaboratively in large teams, sharing feedback for quality and productivity improvement.

  • Prioritize coding tasks to meet turnaround time requirements and client regulatory standards.

  • Comply with HIPAA regulations and internal policies for patient data confidentiality and system security.

  • Adapt to organizational changes including team transitions, location reassignment, or policy revisions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate in Life Sciences or Allied Medical fields.

  • AAPC or AHIMA certified; CIC certification preferred.

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in Acute Care Inpatient coding.

  • Strong exposure to complex procedures from Level I trauma centers or teaching hospitals.

  • Skilled in coding major trauma ER encounters, interventional radiology, cardiac cath, orthopedic, neurology, and observation cases.

  • Proficient in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG coding systems.
