Position Overview
The Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Medical Coding serves as the primary technical authority on coding processes, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure accurate and compliant coding operations. This role focuses on process improvement, regulatory compliance, and staff development, while resolving complex coding issues across the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Expert Guidance: Act as the go-to resource for medical coding expertise, supporting the coding team on complex queries and project requirements.
Process Optimization: Identify opportunities to streamline coding operations, enhance accuracy, and improve productivity.
Training & Development: Develop training modules and educational materials, and deliver ongoing support to coders to ensure compliance and quality standards.
Issue Resolution: Address complex coding issues, coordinate with team leads and stakeholders, and implement solutions effectively.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all coding practices adhere to HIPAA, ICD-9/ICD-10 standards, and other regulatory requirements. Conduct regular audits to maintain quality and compliance.
Performance Monitoring: Track coding performance, review audit results, and provide actionable feedback to optimize team output.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Healthcare, Nursing, Pharmacy, or related field.
Experience: Minimum 3 years of medical coding experience, preferably in Emergency Department (ED) or hospital facility coding.
Certification: CPC, COC, CCS, or AHIMA certification preferred.
Skills & Competencies:
In-depth knowledge of ICD-10, ICD-9, CPT, HCPCS, and revenue cycle processes.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Proficiency in EMR/EHR systems, coding software, and clinical data management platforms.
Ability to lead training sessions and mentor junior coding staff.
