Job Summary:

The Specialty Oncology Clinical Pharmacist at St. Elizabeth Healthcare is responsible for providing direct patient care through pharmacist/practitioner services in the specialty pharmacy. This role focuses on optimizing specialty medication therapies to improve patient outcomes, enhance safety, and manage cost utilization. The ideal candidate will have experience in both Specialty Pharmacy and Oncology.

As an Outpatient Pharmacist, responsibilities include medication dispensing, patient counseling, and ensuring prescription accuracy and safety. Additionally, this role involves offering over-the-counter recommendations and maintaining sound accounting practices for outpatient pharmacy operations. The pharmacist will also provide educational resources to patients and may be required to support the specialty pharmacy while on call.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service Excellence:

    • Provide top-notch customer service by following the AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) model.
    • Demonstrate respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy with patients, families, visitors, and colleagues, regardless of cultural background.
  • Medication Review & Patient Care:

    • Review and monitor patient treatment medications for appropriateness, following clinical and institutional guidelines and patient-specific criteria.
    • Provide final professional review and verification of prescription filling and offsite facility orders.
    • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of filling, with a pharmacist’s final check on all processing.
    • Offer timely, accurate drug information to patients, medical staff, and nursing staff.
  • Supervision & Mentorship:

    • Supervise and direct interns and technicians, providing active mentoring and guidance based on ICARE values.
    • Ensure staff meets patient needs and encourages the use of the AIDET model in their interactions.
    • Report unresponsive behavior to leadership.
  • Inventory & Order Management:

    • Maintain inventory, ensuring products are on hand and ordered from appropriate wholesalers.
    • Follow sound accounting principles and contribute to the department’s financial goals, ensuring the department meets budgeted targets.
  • Liaison and Collaboration:

    • Act as a liaison between various departments, including Hospice, Social Services, Meds to Beds, Specialty Pharmacy, and provider offices, among others.
  • Professional Development & Compliance:

    • Maintain licensure and complete departmental competency/skills assessments.
    • Stay current with pharmacy practices and specialize in areas of practice.
    • Adhere to regulatory guidelines (State Board of Pharmacy, Drug Enforcement Agency, CMS, FDA, The Joint Commission).
  • Additional Duties:

    • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Graduate from a NABP-accredited pharmacy college.
  • Licenses & Credentials:

    • Current US pharmacist license in the state where the work is being performed.
  • Specialized Knowledge:

    • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
    • Ability to multitask effectively.
    • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
    • Familiarity with current practice standards, such as those outlined by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
  • Experience:

    • Previous experience in pharmacy practice, ideally with a focus in oncology or specialty pharmacy.
