Job Summary

Optum, a global leader in healthcare services, is hiring an SME – Medical Coding professional in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG coding, and complex inpatient coding scenarios in hospital settings. This role demands strong attention to detail, adherence to AAPC/AHIMA guidelines, and the ability to ensure accurate coding for optimal healthcare outcomes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient services in hospitals.

  • Ensure proper DRG assignment considering CC/MCC and official coding guidelines.

  • Abstract additional data elements during chart review as needed.

  • Provide documentation feedback and query physicians when necessary.

  • Track and implement updates from AHA guidelines.

  • Maintain coding accuracy by reviewing quality manager materials.

  • Participate in coding meetings and educational initiatives.

  • Organize and prioritize coding tasks to meet compliance and turnaround times.

  • Adhere to HIPAA, data security, and confidentiality policies.

  • Collaborate with team members to improve quality and productivity.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Graduate in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine.

  • Certification from AAPC or AHIMA (CIC preferred).

  • 5+ years of acute care inpatient medical coding experience.

  • Experience in Level I trauma centers or teaching hospitals.

  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG coding.

  • Familiarity with complex cases such as trauma, cardiac catheterization, orthopedic, and neurology cases.

  • Strong understanding of coding compliance standards and GVP guidelines.
