Introduction to the Role:

The Senior Statistical Programmer I is a key, delivery-focused position within AstraZeneca, responsible for the timely and quality programming of clinical study deliverables, adhering to established standards and processes. This role requires a blend of technical programming skills and industry knowledge to independently perform tasks, while also knowing when to seek guidance in more complex scenarios. The Senior Statistical Programmer I will support medium complexity clinical study deliverables and contribute to larger project deliverables. This position also provides opportunities for continuous improvement in programming practices.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Programming Support:
    Collaborate with team members to provide programming support for technical programming and information components of studies or project deliverables.

  • Protocol Implementation:
    Implement statistical programming aspects of study protocols and clinical development programs.

  • Quality Assurance:
    Ensure high-quality standards in personal deliverables and in the work produced by other programmers on the team.

  • Independent Programming:
    Program independently with efficiency, focusing on maintaining high standards of quality.

  • Documentation & Specifications:
    Write and review specifications, ensuring completeness of relevant documentation.

  • Best Practices:
    Contribute to the development and implementation of best practices that improve quality, efficiency, and effectiveness within the function.

  • Compliance & Automation:
    Ensure compliance with standards and the use of automation tools in programming.

  • Risk Management:
    Identify and communicate risks associated with assigned studies or projects.

  • Team Collaboration:
    Collaborate with cross-functional team members, including statisticians, lead programmers, data managers, and study leaders.

  • External Collaboration:
    Work cooperatively with contract programming providers and other external partners.

  • Technical Initiatives:
    Contribute to technical initiatives within the department.

  • Project Management:
    Apply basic project management practices to manage programming aspects of drug or technical projects.


Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Educational Requirements:
    Degree in Mathematics (Applied Math, Engineering, etc.), Statistics, Computer Science, Life Science, or an equivalent field.

  • Programming Skills:
    Proficiency in programming languages, particularly macro language for statistical analysis.

  • Clinical Development Knowledge:
    Intermediate understanding of the clinical development process.

  • Industry Standards:
    Good knowledge of industry standards relevant to statistical programming.

  • Project Management Practices:
    Knowledge and application of project management principles.

  • Problem-Solving Abilities:
    Ability to apply programming knowledge to solve complex problems.

  • Documentation Management:
    Ability to manage and organize relevant documentation related to programming tasks.


Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Multitasking & Time Management:
    Ability to proactively manage multiple concurrent activities within assigned studies or projects.
