Position Overview

At Roche, we advance science to create a healthier future for everyone. We are committed to advancing DNA sequencing technology through the acquisition of Stratos Genomics in 2020, which brought Sequencing by Expansion (SBX™) technology to the forefront. This unique chemistry revolutionizes nanopore sequencing by translating DNA sequences into measurable surrogates, significantly enhancing accuracy and throughput.

As a Principal Scientist, you will play a key role in the Molecular Engineering group, working on developing and synthesizing the building blocks for this groundbreaking technology. Your work will directly contribute to advancing DNA sequencing and improving patient outcomes. We're looking for someone with a deep technical background, leadership skills, and a passion for making SBX technology a success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and Experimentation:
    • Design and execute well-controlled experiments with high attention to detail.
    • Lead innovative research and troubleshoot complex problems creatively.
    • Contribute to the definition and achievement of project goals.
  • Leadership and Mentorship:
    • Lead cross-functional teams, mentoring junior team members and ensuring they are equipped to perform at their best.
  • SOP Development and Reagent Production:
    • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to streamline the production of reagents and starting materials.
    • Participate in the production of reagents, ensuring quality and consistency.
  • Data Analysis & Protocol Development:
    • Conduct thorough data analysis and support the development of lab protocols.
    • Maintain accurate and reliable laboratory records.
  • Collaboration & Presentation:
    • Present findings and progress at group or departmental meetings.
  • Lab Maintenance:
    • Maintain the lab’s cleanliness, organization, and safety.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Continuously propose and implement process improvements to enhance lab functions and outcomes.

    • PhD in a related field with 6+ years of experience.
  • Technical Expertise:

    • 6+ years of laboratory experience in advanced nucleotide/heterocyclic chemistry, phosphorus chemistry, or complex/multi-step organic synthesis.
    • Strong understanding and experience with the chemistry of nucleotides, phosphoramidites, heterocycles, amino acids, and bio-conjugations.
    • Solid background in next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS).
    • Experience working with HPLC, MS, NMR, automated DNA synthesizers, inert atmosphere chambers, and manual pipetting.
  • Preferred Experience:

    • Familiarity with SBX technology, nanopore sequencing, and other emerging technologies in DNA sequencing.
  • Skills & Competencies:

    • Strong leadership, mentorship, and team collaboration skills.
    • Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
    • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
