Position Overview:
Roche is seeking a Scientific Strategy Director with deep expertise in Oncology, Pathology, and Sequencing. This senior leadership role will define and execute scientific strategies for U.S. Medical & Scientific Affairs (MSA), guiding Senior Scientific Managers and collaborating with global stakeholders. The Director will translate complex scientific insights into actionable strategies, ensuring the successful adoption and integration of Roche’s diagnostic solutions across multiple oncology portfolios.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Talent Development: Mentor, coach, and provide guidance to Senior Scientific Managers, fostering growth, succession planning, and high-performing scientific teams.

  • Strategic Planning & Execution: Develop and implement integrated scientific strategies, including evidence generation, education, and external engagement, in alignment with U.S. and global priorities.

  • Field & Cross-Functional Alignment: Collaborate with field medical leaders and cross-functional teams to ensure activities align with scientific strategy and field insights inform execution.

  • External Partnerships: Build and maintain strategic relationships with key opinion leaders, professional societies, and industry partners to drive scientific initiatives and innovation.

  • Resource & Budget Management: Strategically allocate scientific resources, manage operational and discretionary budgets, and maximize scientific return on investment.

  • Culture & Innovation: Champion a culture of scientific excellence, accountability, inclusion, and continuous learning across MSA and broader Roche teams.

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years relevant experience, or

    • Master’s degree with 7+ years relevant experience, or

    • Doctorate (PhD, MD, or equivalent) with 5+ years relevant experience.

  • Leadership: 3–5 years of direct people management experience in Medical & Scientific Affairs or related functions.

  • Scientific Expertise: Extensive experience in oncology, anatomic pathology (digital pathology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization), and molecular pathology (next-generation sequencing, digital PCR). Experience in targeted therapies and companion diagnostics is highly desirable.

  • Industry Experience: Prior experience in diagnostics, clinical laboratory, or pharmaceutical R&D settings.

  • Communication & Decision-Making: Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, manage multiple priorities, and make strategic decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diverse experience across Medical & Scientific Affairs roles, including strategy, field, and operations.

  • Established relationships with key external stakeholders, KOLs, and professional associations.

  • Proven ability to inspire, align, and lead cross-functional teams in a matrixed organization.

  • Experience supporting oncology companion diagnostics in the pharmaceutical industry.

Location & Compensation:

  • Preferred location: Indianapolis, IN (remote options considered)

  • Salary range: $175,300 – $325,500 (based on experience, qualifications, and location)

  • Discretionary annual bonus may apply
