Position Overview:
Roche is seeking an experienced Scientific Strategy Director specializing in Oncology, Pathology, and Sequencing. This senior leadership role will drive U.S. Medical & Scientific Affairs (MSA) strategies across multiple diagnostic portfolios, translating complex scientific insights into actionable medical strategies. The Director will provide guidance to Senior Scientific Managers, collaborate with global stakeholders, and ensure alignment with R&D, regulatory, commercial, and access teams to maximize the impact of Roche’s oncology diagnostic solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Talent Development: Mentor and coach Senior Scientific Managers, fostering professional growth, succession planning, and high-performing scientific teams.

  • Strategic Planning & Execution: Partner with the VP of Medical & Scientific Affairs to define U.S. scientific priorities and lead the development and execution of integrated strategies, including evidence generation, education, and external engagement initiatives.

  • Field & Cross-Functional Alignment: Ensure alignment between field medical activities and scientific strategy, incorporating field insights into planning and execution.

  • External Partnerships: Build and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders, professional societies, and industry partners to advance scientific strategy.

  • Resource & Budget Management: Allocate scientific resources strategically, manage operational and discretionary budgets effectively, and maximize return on scientific investment.

  • Culture & Innovation: Promote a culture of scientific excellence, continuous learning, accountability, and innovation within MSA and across the broader organization.

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of relevant experience, or

    • Master’s degree with 7+ years of relevant experience, or

    • Doctorate (PhD, MD, or equivalent) with 5+ years of relevant experience.

  • Leadership: 3–5 years of direct people management experience in Medical & Scientific Affairs or related fields.

  • Scientific Expertise: Extensive experience in oncology, anatomic pathology (digital pathology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization), molecular pathology (next-generation sequencing, digital PCR). Experience in targeted therapies and companion diagnostics preferred.

  • Industry Experience: Previous roles in diagnostics, clinical laboratory, or pharmaceutical R&D environments.

  • Communication & Decision-Making: Exceptional written and oral communication, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, manage competing priorities, and make sound strategic decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diverse experience across Medical & Scientific Affairs roles, including strategy, field, and operations.

  • Established relationships with key external stakeholders, KOLs, and professional associations.

  • Proven ability to inspire and align cross-functional teams in a matrixed organization.

  • Experience in pharmaceutical industry supporting targeted therapies or companion diagnostics.

Location & Compensation:

  • Preferred location: Indianapolis, IN (Remote options possible)

  • Salary range: $175,300 – $325,500 (based on experience, qualifications, and location)

  • Discretionary annual bonus may apply
