Position Overview:
Roche is seeking an experienced Scientific Strategy Director specializing in Infectious Disease and Molecular Diagnostics. This senior leadership role will drive scientific strategy within the U.S. Medical & Scientific Affairs (MSA) organization across multiple diagnostic portfolios. The successful candidate will provide strategic guidance to a team of Senior Scientific Managers, translate complex scientific insights into actionable strategies, and ensure alignment with global, cross-functional, and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Talent Development: Provide mentorship, coaching, and performance management for direct reports, fostering professional growth, succession planning, and high-performing scientific teams.

  • Strategic Planning & Execution: Partner with the VP of Medical & Scientific Affairs to define U.S. scientific priorities and lead the development and execution of integrated scientific strategies, including evidence generation, education, and external engagement.

  • Field & Cross-Functional Alignment: Collaborate with field leadership to ensure medical activities align with scientific strategy and incorporate field insights into planning.

  • External Partnerships: Build and maintain strategic relationships with key opinion leaders, professional societies, and industry partners to inform and advance scientific strategy.

  • Resource & Financial Management: Allocate MSA scientific resources effectively, manage budgets responsibly, and maximize return on scientific investment.

  • Culture & Innovation: Promote a culture of scientific excellence, continuous learning, and innovation across MSA and the broader organization.

Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Educational Background:

    • Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of relevant experience, or

    • Master’s degree with 7+ years of relevant experience, or

    • Doctorate (PhD, MD, or equivalent) with 5+ years of relevant experience.

  • Leadership Experience: 3–5 years of direct people management experience in Medical & Scientific Affairs or related fields.

  • Scientific Expertise: Extensive knowledge in infectious diseases (respiratory, sexual health, virology/transplants, sepsis), molecular diagnostics, and PCR technologies across laboratory settings. Understanding of clinical and decentralized lab accreditations (CLIA, CAP) is preferred.

  • Industry Experience: Prior roles in diagnostics, clinical laboratory, or R&D within the pharmaceutical or biotech sectors.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively with commercial, regulatory, R&D, and alliance management teams.

  • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication, capable of tailoring messaging for diverse audiences.

  • Decision-Making: Strong ability to navigate ambiguity, manage competing priorities, and make informed decisions with incomplete data.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience across diverse Medical & Scientific Affairs roles including strategy, field, and operations.

  • Established relationships with key external stakeholders and professional associations.

  • Track record of inspiring and aligning cross-functional teams within matrixed organizations.

Location & Compensation:

  • Preferred location: Indianapolis, Indiana (Remote options available)

  • Salary range: $175,300 – $325,500 (based on experience, qualifications, and location)

  • Discretionary annual bonus may apply
