Position Overview

Lilly's Biotechnology Discovery Research (BioTDR) organization is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Scientific Director to join our Biotherapeutic Lead Optimization team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on the development of innovative biotherapeutic medicines, including monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), bispecific antibodies (bsAbs), proteins, and bioconjugates. The successful candidate will lead cutting-edge biotherapeutic design and engineering projects from concept to clinical development. This position requires a deep understanding of the large molecule drug discovery and development process, as well as disease biology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage biotherapeutic design and engineering projects, guiding them from concept through to clinical development.
  • Oversee the development of mAbs, bsAbs, proteins, and bioconjugates, integrating innovative approaches to ensure therapeutic success.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive large molecule drug discovery and development.
  • Provide scientific expertise and influence portfolio and project strategy.
  • Mentor and develop junior scientists, fostering the growth of the team.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in biologics and bioconjugates.
  • Represent Lilly at scientific conferences and build external collaborations to enhance the company's research initiatives.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in biotherapeutics research and development.
  • Proven expertise in lead discovery and optimization for various biologic formats, including antibodies, multispecific antibodies, fusion proteins, and bioconjugates.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering clinical candidates across diverse therapeutic areas.
  • In-depth understanding of large molecule drug discovery and development processes.
  • Expertise in protein design, protein-protein interactions, structure-function relationships, and biophysical characterization.
  • Strong knowledge of developability assessment methods (e.g., stability, solubility, manufacturability).
  • Supervisory and talent management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience collaborating with computational and discovery teams to optimize biologics for a range of indications.
  • Familiarity with automation and high-throughput workflows.
  • Expertise in protein structure analysis tools (e.g., Pymol, Chimera, MOE).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to adapt to shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries to solve complex technical and business challenges.

  • Compensation: The anticipated salary for this position ranges from $144,000 to $250,800, depending on the candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.
