Position Summary

The R&D Scientist will join the R&D Chemistry Team to develop the next generation of transfection reagents, enhancers, and related products. This role involves hands-on polymer synthesis work and reports directly to the Director of Chemistry.


Key Responsibilities

  • Independently design, execute, and analyze laboratory experiments for new/existing transfection technologies and products.

  • Contribute new product ideas and assess their technical feasibility.

  • Perform organic and polymer chemistry reactions (including under inert conditions using Schlenk line and reflux).

  • Synthesize and characterize novel compounds; prepare samples and conduct routine analytical testing.

  • Apply analytical techniques: TLC, GPC, HPLC, NMR, FTIR, UV, DLS, MS, pH meter.

  • Utilize purification and separation methods: extraction, distillation, precipitation, recrystallization, chromatography.

  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook and track synthesized materials in compliance with Good Documentation Practices.

  • Collaborate with Production, Quality, and Operations teams to ensure alignment.

  • Present findings in R&D meetings and participate in knowledge-sharing sessions.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Chemistry.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry.

  • Experience synthesizing and characterizing polymers for biomedical applications (e.g., nucleic acid or drug delivery).

Preferred Requirements

  • 2+ years designing, synthesizing, and characterizing polymers for nucleic acid delivery.

  • Industrial R&D experience under GxP guidelines and regulations.

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Ability to work independently and in multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).


Travel Requirements

  • Up to 5% travel, including overnight.


Location Requirements

  • Onsite role at Madison, WI facility.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $76,600 – $107,200 (based on skills, experience, and location).
